Im possibly geting a bull terrier just all of my friends or other dog owners say dont get a white dog?
I know boxers have something to do with pigment or something but whats wrong with a bull terrier as these are a popular breed and mostly always come in white?

a few other dog owners have told me that the dog will need hundreds of vet checks in the summer and it will need loads of sun cream and other creams?

Are these all a load of rubbish or which bits are true?

Thanks
Max

Hi Max! Bull terriers, like many other breeds which can be predominantly white (boxers, dalmatians, English setters etc), can suffer from hereditary deafness, and a reputable breeder will have all pups, whether white or coloured, BAER tested before sale, and will not sell you a totally deaf puppy. Those who are deaf in one ear can still hear perfectly well enough (probably better than you or I) to lead a completely normal life - in fact in most cases it is impossible to tell the difference between a dog with full bilateral hearing and one who can only hear in one ear.

Dogs with white ears and muzzles can suffer from sunburn in the summer, and ordinary sunblock on these areas will prevent that. There should be no need for many vet checks at all - the 'hundreds of vet checks' bit is indeed a load of rubbish.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, like with all hereditary problems, not all breeders bother with testing their breeding stock. Whether this is because they don't know about them (then they don't know enough about the breed and shouldn't be breeding yet) or don't care about them (then they shouldn't be breeding, full stop). It really is down to the prospective purchaser of any breed to research what problems they are prone to, and what tests can be done to minimise problems. This is where the Breed Clubs (details available from the Kennel Club) play a major role in steering people away from the don't know/don't care breeders towards those who are more reputable.

Hi I have two white EBT's, one allwhite and one with black eye patch. This was traditionally the post popular colour favoured in shows etc... White is traditionally seen as having problems relating to deafness and blindness in some breeds and this historically resulted in pts white puppies of the respective breeds. On the contrary white has been encouraged with EBT's. Nevertheless,  yes you will need to put on sun screen in the summer if they are exposed, especially on the parts which tend to be hairless. Other than that I have not had any problems relating to pigment. they have medical problems which they are prone to but I do not know about taking to the vets all the time dring summer because of their colour.

They are the most fantastic companions and very like a two year old child, I would not be without them as they are terribly funny with big personalities but perhaps not for everyone because they can be a handful too!! mine have brilliant temperaments great with everything big or small!!!!

Hi i have recently lost a white boxer she was 8 1/2 yrs old she wasnt deaf and until she became ill just two weeks before we had to loose her the only time she visited the vets was for her annual boosters, maybe we was lucky with her but she was bought from a reputable breeder, I would make sure that the breeder who you decide to purchase a dog from has all her or his dogs health checked, good luck
