Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / blind dog out for a walk
- By millie n pip [gb] Date 06.01.05 21:29 UTC
I have 2 Jack Russells both age 6.  One of them has recently gone blind.  When approaching other dogs when out for a walk she is frightened and barks and growls at other dogs.  The other dog is now joining in and it is becoming embarrassing to take them out.  Does anyone else have a blind dog, and how do they cope?

i dont have a blind dog but a friend does a laso apso and he is very old he barks and growls when on walks too and while in his house the only thing i can say is it seems to be normal lots of older and blind dogs act that way to protect themselfs call a trainer maybe they will have sound advise but in my experience they always will act that way cus they cant be sure they will be safe  sorry hope this helps

I have a blind dog & she doesn`t growl when out for a walk or at home, tho she went blind slowly, did you dog go blind over time or straighway. That may have something to do with the growling. I stopped taking mine out for walks as she became more unsure of herself outside & stopped enjoying them, but I`m lucky as I have a large garden :)
The best I can suggest is try taking her where she won`t come across strange dogs, you be on the lookout for any & if you see any change direction. I don`t put my blind dog in any situation for her to become frightened, not easy tho I know! you could also join the group below for advice :)

I have a blind Staffie, does not seem to affect him in any way what so ever, i can even let him off the lead, just gotta keep the voice contact. Not aftaid of people or other dogs. I have even introduced (3 days ago) a new Staffie to my house a 2 year old male as well.. Gets on Briliantly. plays, shares food/water bowl, and my bed the sods, the only thing i gotta watch out for is when Dood (my old 8 year old Blind dog) is on my lap having cuddles that Bruno (2 year old new addition) does not try to come up behind him for cuddles aswell, but all that then happens is a small growl but normaly ends up in dood gettin down and swapping places.
