A friends mum has died and the only cards I could find with words in were very religious so as im not religious I got one without words but now im stuck with what to write in it :(

Does anyone have any ideas ?

I've written this a few times and it's even been read out at a couple of funerals.  Not religious but spiritual.  See if it fits for your situation.

Death is nothing at all.  I have only slipped away into the next room.

I am I, and you are you.  Whatever we were to each other, that we still are.

Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used.  Put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.  Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together.

Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, let it be spoken without effort, without the trace of a shadow on it.

Life means all that it ever meant.  It is the same as it ever was; there is unbroken continuity.

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight?  I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner.

All is well.

this is a poem i wrote once,you are welcome to use it if you think it is suitable

Death is like a curtain that falls at the end of a play
it seems so heavy & final
yet they encore & encore again

death is the end of the start
simply the means to an end
life is as a dream with death as the morning
look outside & you will see
the light of a new day dawning.                                                    michelle dunscombe

my friends mum died last year & they used it in her service.

Is it for your friend and her family?  If so, in these situations, I always just keep it simple and say how sorry I am for their loss and how my thoughts are with them all at this sad time.  If I knew the deceased person well, I might wirte a few lines saying something about a nice memory I would always treasure of that person, but if you're sending to a friend, it doesn't need to be anything fancy-they will be grateful for the gesture and that you're thinking of them.

That is very true Spaniel lover, maybe I will just do that - its for a bloke anyway so he probably wouldnt think much of a poem, although I think both of those poems are fab and I will keep them for future use if that is ok :)

When tomorrow starts without me

When tomorrow starts without me,and I'm not there to see
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things we didn't get to say.
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you,
And each time you think of me, I know you'll miss me, too.
But when tomorrow starts without me, please try and understand,
That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand,
And said my place was ready in heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But as I turned to walk away,a tear fell from my eye,
For all my life I'd always thought I didn't want to die.
I had so much to live for and so much yet to do,
It seemed almost impossiblethat I am leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays, the good ones and the bad,
I thougth of all the love we shared and all the fun we had.
If I could relive yesterday ,I thought, just for a while,
I'd say good-bye and kiss you and maybe see your smile.
But then I fully realized that this could never be.
For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.
And when I thought of worldly things that I'd miss come tomorrow,
I thought of you, and when I did, my heart was filled with sorrow.
But when I walked through heaven's gates,I felt so much at home.
When God look down and smiled at me,from His great golden throne.
He said, "This is eternity and all I've promised you,
Today your life on earth is past,but here it starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last,
And since each day's the same day,there's no longing for the past.
But you have been so faithful, so trusting and so true,
Though there were times you did some things you knew you shouldn't do.
But you have been forgiven,and now at last your free. So won't you take my handand share my life with me?
"So when tomorrow starts without me ,don't think we're far apart ,For everytime you think of me,
I'm right here in your heart.

Heaven's Door

If I should go before you,
If life on earth were through;
I'll stop just inside Heaven's door,
And there I'll wait for you.
You've but to look cross star filled skies,
Past the moon and then beyond;
To know my leaving could never break,
This heart's undying bond.
And if you should go before me,
If your journey on earth were through;
You know I will be close behind,
I'll never be far from you.
Across the span of time and space,
This love will reach this far;
For you'll always carry a bit of my heart,
No matter where you are.
We've no way of knowing who will remain,
Or who will go on before;
But if I should go first, you'll find love there,
I'll be waiting just inside Heaven's door.

I like these two poems

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awake in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there.  I did not die.

I'm not sure who wrote this one (I'm not sure anyone knows for sure) and I wrote it from memory so there may be a few errors.

I also like Christina Rossetti's

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you planned:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.
