I think I may have the beginnings of a problem. It's day 5 today. Last night at about 2:30 a.m. Pepper (toy poodle) started to get very anxious and she wouldn't stay with her puppies. When they would cry, she would run back to the box we have them in but hesistated to jump in and would start whining. When she did go back in she'd give them a quick lick and would jump out again. She won't settle. It's as if she's looking for something (we think it might be the 1st puppy she delivered which was dead.) She is also doing alot of digging on the towels in her whelping box and on my sofas. As far as I know she never really saw the first puppy and has been fine with the other two until late last night. Do you have any suggestions?

It sounds very much how my bitch behaved when she was developing eclampsia. Contact your vet and get some liquid calcium (Collo-Cal D) or whatever it's called nowadays) quickly.
This sounds like classic ecampsia signs to me, get her to your vet quickly for a calcium injection, it is a life threatening illness.

Emma behaved like this when she devoloped eclampsia, and needed calcuim drip. As others have said, get her to vet immediately this can be life threatening.
