went for a long walk today with Tyler (6 months) just on our way back when he went absolutely berserk jumping and pulling like a madman as we have only had him a month and his recall is not very good i can't let him off lead. I really didn't know what to do as the more i walked the more crazy he went and if i stood still he carried on. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to handle these moments of madness. I realise he is excited and letting of steam but it's quite hard when your on the other end of the lead and this dog is flying round your head like a nutter!!

Are you walking Tyler with Meg or on his own? Do you let Meg off the lead?
Unfortunatley we do not have meg anymore. Tyler is walked alone.

So sorry. I remembered the name as I once had a Meg and you were trying to teach her to retrieve. She was only young.:(
I'm sure that one of the training folk will be alone to help you soon.
So sorry to hear that you have lost Meg, and you were interested in showing her weren't you.
What a shame for you.
Yes she was a year and a half, it was awhile ago now hence i have not been on site for a while we never did get to any shows. Anyway we have new lease of life with Tyler who against all odds is doing really well. Thankyou for remembering us.

Hi I remember you too. Sorry about Meg.
Onto Tyler does he behave like this only when you're going home. You say he went beserk on the way back.
Or is he always like that? at 6 months he's full of energy. Have you tried a long training lead about 30' then he could have a run around and burn off some energy that way.
Karen
No he doesn't do it all the time, it's only the second time he has done it but he was wild, and i don't think it's because he was going home as we went a different route today, we have had two retracting leads one snapped and the one is broken and hard to use as he gets tangled up we need to get a new one. I have a feeling thats what he wanted a good run as my partner lets him off when on certain routes i however don't have the confidence he would come back if he got distracted.
He does recall well inside but outside is a different story.

Hi have you tried both taking him out, and then letting him off where your partner feels is the "safe area" and calling him between the two of you. May give you the confidence, and him the run he wants. :)
Other than that try the long training lead and let it trail behind him you can put your foot on it to stop him and he gets the run.
But as youve only had him a month maybe something in the walk reminded him of his "past" you;ll never know I don't suppose.
Take care
Karen
We normally both take him out together but when may partner is at work i take him alone. We will try calling him between each other.
