hello my dog chases everything that runs there is no training i can give her that will stop this at home as far as i know she just turned 1 she is a shepard smooth collie mix i guess it prey drive but how do i stop the chasing when it comes to cars and kids cats bikes ect.. please reply. im a new member
I am no expert but i would sugest not letting her off the lead, until you have mastered recall with her. Have you considered an extending lead, which lets your dog run, yet you remain in control? Reward her with tit-bits when she comes back to you too.
Finding a good training class in your area will help !!
Good Luck, and let us know how you progress

I'd agree with liberty about the lead, and the training. We have one dog who is scared of traffic and one who isn't scared of anything - the younger one has needed lots of time spent sat and walking along a road, watching the traffic and being taught to "leave". We started in the house teaching him to "leave" bits of food - then moved on to the park, "leaving" joggers, prams, ducks - anything and everything. If I see a potential "chase" object, I call him back, put him in a sit, and talk to him as I give him a treat, taking his attention away from whatever it is he would have gone for.
If you don't have a reliable recall - try using a long line - do a search on here for it and you'll get lots of tips. He's a BC, and I would never trust him off lead along a road, but starting off like this might at least make it manageable.
Does your chap lunge towards the traffic too? I found a headcollar can help here for the purposes of control (my older lad nearly dragged me into the road once), and keeping my back in place, but there really is no substitute for training.
HTH :) I'm sure others will be along soon to help.

Yes, until you have some confidence that you can call her away or get her into a 'down', then don't let her off lead.
At home, work on a 'down' command - the aim is to be able to give her the command and she will go straight into a 'down' whereever she is, and whatever she's doing. This has saved many dogs lives and should be one of the basics you teach your dog, as sometimes even a recall will get your dog into more trouble, if, for instance they've already crossed a road.
thanks digger she does always come when called but not while in chase mode i will take your adivse

Hi Buffy, if your recalls are usually reliable you should consider training the chase recall - It is possible ;) My hound is clicker trained and I am using the clicker to teach the chase recall (which does exactly what is say's on the tin :D) We start with a helper a distance away and use a special toy! With the dog sat next to you and waiting, you throw out the toy towards your helper - If the dog leaves straight away, your helper should pick up the toy before the dog gets there (No reward - this is what usually happens the first few attempts) - If however the dog waits for your command (or even better waits and gives you eye contact) the dog is rewarded, clicked and "get it". Once this is mastered, the next stage is to stop the dog mid-chase toward the toy. Eventually you should be able to command "STOP" half way to the toy and the dog 'should' stop - This is the beginning of the chase recall and you can probably see how this works in a busy outdoor environment/when chasing others!! It isn't easy with some dog's (like mine ;)) but if you work at it, it can be achieved...One day! I have to admit I sometimes back up my commands with a spray collar, this totally depends on the situation and what I am asking of my dog but I do sometimes use it...
