is the white powder the sress & do you know about 100% whole-wheat?

I would check when the book you have was written. It has been found that mineral supplementaion of an already Good diet can actually cause problems. Apart from skeletal problems if overdone Calcium supplements prior to whelping can actually cause the very problem (Eclampsia, which is life threateneing) you are hoping to avoid.
Also many dogs have been found to be allergic to wheat (probably because it has been the main grain used in dog foods in previous years), most dog foods then went on to using Corn, and when dogs became increasingly allergic to this they went on to formulations using Rice and other Carbohydrate sources. There are now dogs sensitive to all the major carb sources,a dn the main reason for this is that grains are not a natural food for dog in the quantitities used in pet food. Some pet foods have only about 10-15% meat content, all the rest is ?Grain! This includes tinned wet products, so don't be fooled.

I personally wouldn't supplement a pregnant bitch's diet with calcium (or anything else other than top quality 'real' food!) because it has been implicated many times in actually
increasing the risk of eclampsia. I also have Hilary Harmer's book (my edition was revised in 1974) and this is one of the pieces of advice she gives which was thought sensible at the time of writing but the passing of years has found it to be wrong!
The best book to follow is The Book of the Bitch, by Evans and White, who confirm (on page 81 of my copy) that supplementation is generally best avoided, and that over-supplementation with calcium can also lead to skeletal deformities in the puppies.
:)

Why do I always find myself agreeing with you, lol :D

Definately agree with you both, Stess is a calcuim/mineral supplement and I certainly wouldn't recommend anything other than a good puppy food for the last few weeks if she's not increased her intake.

That book, although very good, is also very old and was written in the days when it was thought that pregnant bitches should have calcium supplements so the puppies have good bone. At that time, Stress was probably the only one on the market. As others have said, it has since been found that additional calcium during pregnancy makes the bitches system lazy so when she needs reserves of calcium during labour, she is unable to utilize her reserves and inertia can occur.
Supplementing the bitch during and after whelping (while nursing pups) is fine, but then liquid calcium (Callo Cal D) is probably best because being a liquid it is absorbed more quickly, and can be dropped into the mouth with a syringe.

Just to add if you look on human vitamin and mineral supplements 9 times out of 10 it says pregnant women either shouldn`t take them or consult a doctor first. To my mind bitches are no different, you have been given some very good advice above about giving a good wholesome diet of real food.
