hi i was just wondein about sibe weight i have 2 sibes 8months and 4 months the 8 month has just sopped his leggy stage and suddenly started to fill out over the last month and had him weighed and he was just over 30kg after looking at he breed standard i notie this is over he maximum.  the vet said she tinks he looks fine and not overweight for his size.
however i did go to a absa race the end of nov at sheerwood pines and he was alot taller than most and he was only 7 months.  most of them couldnt believe this.  but his dad is a tall boy.
i was just wondering as i do plan on working him whether there is a weight restriction or guide like if he was to be shown.
any help would be great also if there are any owners in my area whether we could meet so my babies can meet more of there breed? or if u work them so i could get more tips. the eldest has been on a rig once so far with older slower team and loved it listened to everything i asked and i would love him to keep it up.
i am in kent.

thanx again for any info

I don't have sibes but my male mal is 7 1/2 months old and is 32Kg. 30Kg does seem rather alot at 8 months - how tall is he? I think the upper limit for males (in the standard) is around 27 - 28Kg.

This is what the Breed Standard for Siberians says:

"Size -

Height: dogs 53-60cms (21-23.5ins) at withers; bitches 51-56cms (20-22ins) at withers. Weight: dogs 20-27kgs (45-60lbs); bitches 16-23kgs (35-50lbs).

Weight should be in proportion to height. These measurements represent the extremes in height and weight, with no preference given to either extreme. A dog should not exceed 60cms (23.5ins) or a bitch exceed 56cms (22ins)."

However, if you are not going to show him, I wouldn't worry too much about weight/height etc as long as he is fit and healthy. I don't think any of the groups which organise races in this country have any kind of weight/height restrictions. He just needs to be a KC registered pedigree Siberian Husky.
As a general rule of thumb, a sibe's weight is about right if you can feel the ribs but not see them (when in full coat). For younger pups, I would always err on the side of too much rather than too little weight.

Good Luck

Mick

Is he a pedigree Sibe? I was just wondering as some of the Sibe X Mals that I have seen tend to be on the large side :)

out of my 4 siberians i have 2  that are rather large, they are both defintley KC registred pure breed siberians, they are just oversized!  one is pushing 27 inches the other 25 inches.  the one who is 27 inches weighs around 26/27 kgs and the 25 inches is around 22kg.  both are worked in harness and are lean, well muscled with little fat on them.  i would like them to carry a little more weight as they are a bit lean at the moment but we are in the middle of the working season and it is a bit difficult ;-)

edited to say
there are rather a lot of oversized sibes around at the moment, recently at LKA my 7 month pup who is not fully grown yet and stands around 22" looked tiny compared to some of the pony sized monsters in minor puppy!!

yes he is kc reg and andy steadman who i speak to which is a breeder i know in derby who comes highly rec says that the breed lines he has come from are very good racing lines as he does alot of research into each line he comes across.  so i know he is def a pure sibe and its only in the last month that he has shot up and out and since when i saw andy last was at the rally in nov he has changed loads.
As i said earlier too at the race there was only two sibes pups of a similar age i can recall that were the same height as him then.
I am gonna be speakin to andy for advice once the hols are over so in the mean time just wanted some info as to any racing restriction or any guides.

thanx again for ur replies

If you are able why don`t you email a picture to some of the people who have responded.  Mick has considerable experience in the breed as do others who have responded.

Our Logan (Sibe) is over the breed standard 26 " ish, and is around 25kg.  He was marginally heavier at 8 months or so but has toned up after being worked. I have a couple of pictures of Logan at 8 months if you are interested.

Next rally for us is Sherwood Pines night & day rally this weekend and then Aviemore.

Hi Ajolie,

I think we met at Sherwood Pines, Was he Black and white? and was the younger pup light  grey and white puppy? (I think) A lady was holding the younger pup and a guy with the older one, i was talking to you for a while.( if it was you) I'd had Janska my Sibie with me, she was wearing a red collar and harness?
