I've been left in charge of the house while my parents are away on their hols(they get a break before puppy arrives but me...no chance!!) and one my daily 'tasks', as my dad call them is to check his email(both AOL and Outlook express) well the stupid lap top has gone and 'died' on me.
It was fine this morning but I think I haven't shut it down properley before putting it down on the carpet, it's really hot-like it's over heated and the screen is stuck on the 'Saving your settings...' with the Windows window. The cursor is still moving and it will NOT switch off. I can check his AOL account on here but I need to access the outlook express one too, EVERY DAY!! Help!!!Please!!!

Don't worry about Windows shutdown. Just switch it off with the Off switch, let it cool down and start it again.

That's the thing though, it won't switch off, it's like the button is not working. If it was this computer I'd just stick a pen int he 'reset' button but this thing doesn't seem to ahve one!!

Try hitting Control - Alt - Delete and close down all running applications.

Keep hold of the off button until it goes off (it may need about 5 to 10 seconds of you pressing the button down before it turns off)

Hold the off button down for 10 seconds

Oh Ice, you got there before me :)

WOW, thanks everyone , that worked!!! Yay, I'm so impatient I was probably just short of holding the button down long enough!!
Isn't it great when you 'win' a fight with a 'machine'?!!!!
Thanks again everyone!

If you're using it on carpet, ideally you should have a board or something underneath it to help the air flow - I often use mine on the bed which isn't terribly good for it either :p

I know, I usually have it on a little tabel and when it's on my knee i lift it up occassionally to let it cool, I like the was they are called 'note book' tho so technically you soundn't have them on you knee, whats the point then?!!!! You need to be able to watch the TV and be on CDs at the same time!!!

I use mine on my lap all the time - its lovely and warm in the winter :D Though I do have to keep lifting it up to cool it down like you said

I use my laptop on a wire tray...the kind you use for cooling cakes fresh from the oven...looks aa bit weird but does the trick. In the event of your laptop not switching off, try pressing the onn off switch for 10 seconds and if that fails as it does sometimes, take out the battery then put it back in!

My Daughter has done this with my laptop plenty she shuts the lid makes sure mains isnt plugged in and leaves it to die when battery has run out it has always switched back on again ok I usually hold down power button but if this isnt working you could try my daughters method its never hurt my laptop

If laptop freezes throw it across room....on second thoughts, don't do that, no matter how much you want to!

Sometimes holding the button doesn't work, if it doesn't, take out battery!

Nice ideas on where to place laptops!  Mine sits on my desk, on a docking station, and I am looking at a screen, using a keybored and mouse!  Deafeats object really!  But I can unclip it and shoe someone else anywhere in the house what I have found without dragghing them up here! lol
