Topic Dog Boards / Health / Parvo Virus How long did you wait?

Although my dog didn't die of confirmed Parvo she did die from a virus and the vet has advised that we wait at least 2 months before getting a new puppy as the virus could be lurking in our home. This is proving very hard as the house is awful without a pet.
I have read on different websites that viruses can hang around for months.
We are afraid that if we do get a puppy that the virus will be waiting.
I have considered buying a disinfectant that you can use around the home to kill viruses but up to now no-one can confirm that you can use it on home furnishings eg carpets.
Can anyone help?
How long did you wait before you got another dog?

I used to work in a rehoming kennels and bording kennels, and every so often somthing like this would happen and whipe out a whole puppy block. They did not used to use it again for six months. We had to put all new dogs in the spare blocks, so i would think that to not put another puppy at risk i would leave it for six months and i would still be using the disenfectants that you can buy.

Your BEST disinfectant when you have a suspected Parvo case is Virkon S, Apart from Virkon, most disinfectants used in veterinary clinics contain Quaternary Ammonium Compounds ("Quats"), Glutaraldehyde or Synthetic Phenols - yet independent testing shows these to be ineffective against parvovirus. In independent tests around the world Virkon stands alone in being effective against this virus - as well as many other bacterial, viral and fungal pathogens. this disinfectant was recommended to me from someone on this site and I am amazed at what the research has shown.

my freind's dog also died of a virus similar to  Parvo. She followed her vets advice to wait six weeks before introducing another puppy- she had another dog at home who was okay.

In the meantime she disinfected the house, cage etc. She picked her puppy four weeks later but asked the breeder to keep it for another two weeks.

New puppy is now seven years old.

Don't Dupont who make Virkon do animal testing ? I'm sure they were involved with testing at HLS as well as GM crops

Still I suppose as this stuff is used for parvo control it's ok

Do you know what virus?
I had a dog who died from a virus (not parvo), I waited 3 months before adding a new pup. I had this puppy for 3 weeks and the puppy died. Is it really worth the risk. he died this morning and I wished I had never had him as he may still be alive and happy with another owner. :-(

Please think long and hard about your decision to have another puppy in a household that has had a death arising form such viral infections. No matter what disinfectant one uses, or what you do to try and rush the process, sometimes waiting a little time makes all the difference.
I will be waiting a very long time before I add another puppy, if ever. The heartache and the blame just is not enough to explain how I feel at the moment.
Viruses can live in soil for many months or even years after. You need to really do alot of research before making this decision. I thought I had done enough and was ready for my new puppy. Obviously I had no idea just how vigorous this virus was.

Has your vet not told you what virus? The info I was given from Glasgow Uni  about the parvo virus is it can hang around for up to a yr & it can affect dogs under a yr old but usuallt pups so best not to have a dog under that age for a yr. Also that at the time there wasn`t any known disinfectant to kill it but ordinary bleach was a sgood as anything, this was 3yrs ago so things might have changed since then. I also think a lot of the vet disinfectants are not for home use/enclosed places & if you use them indoor need to air very well first? Thing is the virus could be lurking in any nook or cranny how do you know where to clean???
Give Glasgow Vet University Diagnostics Services a ring, see if you can speak to Hal Thompson or Dianne Addy, they`ll give you the info you need. But you really need to know what virus you`re dealing with :)

My friend was told it was definitely not Parvo but a similar virus of which there are many. Her eighteen month gsd was playing with her frisbee at nine oclock and in the vets, on a drip and fighting for her life by 3pm on the Monday. She died on the Friday morning.
