Hi everyone
We found a baby hedgehog in the gardon earlier and have kept a eye on it, it hasn't moved for ages but is still alive so we have wrapped it in a towel and put in in a box, it makes little noises we we pull the towel back to check it! I dont really know what to do with it, should it be hybernating? (excuse spelling) should I try to give it some milk, should I take it somewhere? You see all these places on the telly that look after wildlife but I cant even get through to the RSPCA not that I've ever found them helpfull in the past!
Has anyone got any ideas?? Could I feed it some dog food? Or should I not feed it?
Thanks
Saff

I think cat food is better for hedgehogs..... i had a baby hedgehog a few months back, he was RIGHT in the wrong place, and liable to get stepped on so i rescued him as mum didnt seem to want to come back for him.

hi
i saw a programme on TV once about baby hedgehogs that were rescued. They were given little pipettes of honey with warm milk.
Don't know if this is the right thing to do or not but I bet it tasted good:-)
Good luck with your little hedgehog I hope he/she pulls through they are such beautiful animals.
Van

It wouldn't be cows milk tho as it scours hedgehogs-cat food is the nearest to the hedgehog food our local pet warehouse has

Hi the link I gave Kay are experts in rescuing hedgehogs so I would go with the advice they gave.Gillian

i rescued a squirrel a few weeks back. It's sholder was injured so i phoned rspca and they told me to take to a local vet as they had a legal obligation to care for all small wildlife. I took it to the nearest one (not mine though as too far at the time) and they took it in no questions.

If it was a grey squirrel it would probably be PTS as they cannot be released into the wild after treatment because they are classed as vermin & are not a native british breed Sad isn't it

Yes it was oh i feel soooo sad now :( :( :(

I have about a dozen grey squirrels visit the bird feeders everyday & when it is really cold I put canned chappie out for them & they love it along with various meat eating birds like robins etc & there are always at least two full peanut holders that hold half a kilo of nuts for them to"steal" Had to laugh as i put out some soaked brown bred & there was one with a slice in one paw & half in the other trying to climb the cordon apple tree, she ended up going up sideways with the bread in her teeth. If they are treated or hand reared they have to be kept in cages for the rest of their lives They have a good life around here as their drays are in some huge old trees safe from predators & good for keeping an eye on me putting out the foos
There have never been red squirrels around here as we have the wrong sort of woodland but we still have song thrushes & I tuft all the snails out of the green house for them
I use no slug pellets so the veg garden is a feeding ground for the hedgepigs during the spring summer & autumn I also leave plebty of fallen apples etc for the birds as well as the wild bird food

Hi
Just to let you all know the baby hedgehog is safe and well, I took it to tiggywinkles on Thursday night.
So thanks to Satincollie for giving me the link to them, I had no idea they were as near as they were to where I live, so that worked out really well.
They also told me to feed it dog food with a few bits of dried cat food spinkled on the top (which I had)
and to give it water not milk as milk can make them ill.
Thanks again to satincollie!
