my long coat chi has at least an inch of fur extending past her toes.  Her name is Millie, but now we call her "Snow Foot."  How does a Mexican hot weather dog come so adapted for cold weather?  Incidentally, she likes cool-cold weather much better than warm weather. Anything over 75 degrees she finds uncomfortable. 

Does she get much exercise on hard abrasive surfaces?  This generally helps to limit hair growth between the toes, but if she generally runs around on grass, then the hair will just grow and grow.

The problem is, in mud the hair can get matted and become a ball of clay. Even worse, in cold weather is can pick up water which then freezes into an ice ball!

Trim with a pair of Scissors. Preferably with the blunt rounded points to avoid impailing the dog if she struggles. (Be careful to avoid the little web between the toes)

The best way to do it, is to brush the hair from between her toes up with your fingers. Then trim this close to the top of the foot. Then repeat the process brushing the hair down. Finally trim to shape around the paw. Doing it this way keeps it short and keeps even round ended scissors away from the web between the toes.
