Hi
I gradually switched my 7 month old lab from Eukanuba to Burns Canine Extra a month or so ago. I was advised by the nutritionist at Burns to keep her on it for a couple of months, however on the back of the packet it says the following:-
"From 6 months of age feed one of the Burns Adult Formulae. Depending on the individual needs this may be supplemented with a proportion of Canine Extra until the growth slows at around 12 months of age"
Problem is that I am running rapidly out of Canine Extra and can't order till the New Year from Burns. The pet shop near me sells the adult maintenance but not Canine Extra. Would it be alright for me to switch her on to Adult maintenance now or should I wait another month. I am confused as they advise switching to adult from 6 months but Desi is now 7 months.
What is the right thing to do and should i still be supplementing her diet with Canine Extra.
Thanks
Van
Hiya
IMHO I would get some of the Adult maintenance from your local pet store now, and introduce it in increasing amounts with whats left of your Canine extra. Its exactly what I did after contacting them with the same dilema myself :)
However, they're really good at responding to individual questions - so you could email them directly if your still not convinced and have any issues with her weight etc ;)

Hi Jo
Thanks for that. I did just try to call Burns again but the office is closed till 4 Jan by that time I will totally have run out of Canine Extra. The annoying thing is that I ordered another bag in advance the 7.5kg but this is the one that has nearly finished.
Did you add the Canine Extra until your pup was 12 months into the complete adult? or at what stage did you phase out Canine Extra?
The thing is I really only have a few cupfuls of Canine Extra left so don't quite know what to do. I think you are right and I will get the adult maintenance this week hopefully they will be open tomorrow and start to introduce that what concerns me is that if I stop Canine Extra to quickly Desi will lose out on certain protein/nutrients etc
I wish the office was open!!!!

Hi Van...and a Happy New Year!
I'm sorry I'm not good at explaining myself on here (reason why I don't post much  ) I actually used up what was left (about 3 cups) of the Canine Extra in decreasing amounts into the new Venison & Rice Adult Maintenance over 3 days or so. Then continued on Venison & Rice by itself ever since. If its was a completely different brand of food - I would of taken up to 10 days for the change over - but because Burns is a holistic food with such basic ingredients I had no worries at all. My hound was 7 1/2 months when I did the change over. Also, Burns said to me that "I could have changed her over to Adult maintenance from 6 months old, as she's a 'large breed' ".

I would continue to supplement with canine extra for the first 12months or so. For the few days it will take you to get hold of another bag I would use the adult formulae, it will not have any premanent detremental effect, but if you have some canine extra i would mix it in as gradually as your supply allows. HTH a little ...
