Hi,

I am looking for some advice on vetting potential buyers and where best to advertise?
My pups are now 3 weeks old and we are now thinking of their new homes. I am a member of the Bas Hou club and I am Kennel Club regestering them in the new year, has anyone used their advertising service before as I have heard good and bad things about them.
I want to ensure they are going to best homes as much as I can, so any help appreciated.

Does the basset hound club have a litter register secretary? Some clubs do and buyers contacting the club get your details from the litter register secretary. The Kennel Club scheme is useful, but like any scheme of this nature does not "vet" any potential buyer, that is up to the breeder.
Most breeders have a contract of sale, detailing exactly what they expect of a puppy owner, and when the puppies are registered, they endorse the registration papers at the KC with not eligible for export pedigree and progeny not eligible for registration. Both these endorsements can be lifted at a later date by the breeder. they are put there to help protect the puppy, as the endorsements make the puppy worth less for a puppy farmer or dealer. Sometimes the stud dog owner or breeder of your bitch maybe able to help you find the right homes for your puppies. Whenever I have had a litter of puppies the stud dog owner has been invited and has visited the litter, and when one of my dogs has been used I visit once the litter is born.
Some breeders insist on visiting the potential owners home and checking that out too. They can then point out areas which are not escape proof, for example. My friend Mrs Presdee visited every home before the puppy went to it's new owner, including one home, in Switzerland, as one of the puppies had been sold to a family there.

Hi Polly

Thanks, I own both the bitch and the stud dog, i should of mentioned this. As far as i am aware the club does not have a advertisement section as such just word of mouth. I have made them aware of the litter.
Thanks for your reply i have out together a list of questions and i will advertise as you may register and interest thus giving me the option to refuse if i feel the need to.

If you are a member of the breed club then that should generally be enough to sell your puppies I would imagine.

Hi

The only person you can rely on is yourself.  The Clubs secretaries are not there to Vet potential owners.  (Some do)
I have only bred 2 litters in 13 years and for both of these litters I have:
1.   Insisted the potential owners visit me first before I even consider them for a puppy.
2.   Visited there home and all of the family. If I am unable to do this, I ask one of my Basset people to visit for me.
3.   Build up a good relationship with the potential owners
4.   I have a contract of sale informing them that all KC regs are endorsed and the said puppy will not be used for breeding. Should they enter a situation where they can no longer care for the said Basset they MUST return the Basset to me and I will refund them fair market value.
5.   I take all the puppies to be seen by the vet prior to rehoming.
6.   They all have there first jab before leaving me.

Naturally there are all fully wormed.

I keep in contact at all times...............if they are a good home they will not let you down.

Some people may think this is well over the top............so..if they do...they don't have one of my puppies.

Just be careful............if you do your home work, all of you puppies should go to loving homes.

I found Book Of The Bitch had some good pointers on vetting potential owners and such like.

I found that my gut feeling was my best chance of deciding on a family for any one of my pups. I was right on all counts and i still get updated pics for my website 2 years on from the last litter. But then im usually quite a good judge of character.

It does help if you can visit the homes of the potential owners, if they intend to keep the dog outside you will need to make sure the pen is suitable, they have sufficient equipment for cleaning it out etc etc. At first you feel like you are intruding but its well worth it for the pup, you need to know where your baby is going.
