Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Naturediet how much for a westie
- By HAMISH75 [gb] Date 29.12.04 18:44 UTC
Hi All

Does anybody know how much a westie should have of naturediet per day, i have looked on the pack and it says small dog 1/2 pack per day medium dog 1-1 1/2 packs per day, the lady said in the petshop that a westie is classed as a medium dog but i am not sure. If anybody on here feeds their westies this food i would be interested to hear from them.
Should i put a mixer biscuit with the naturediet only i am a bit concerned if he does not have biscuit his teeth will not keep clean, i always believed that the crunch of the biscuit cleaned the teeth but with a moist food how do the teeth stay clean?
Thanks
Helen

Not sure how helpful this is as I don't own westies but I am currently feeding naturediet to my two large breed dogs. I've found it varies with different dogs - my bitch is 37Kg and gets between 1 1/2 - 2 packs per day. My young dog whom currently weighs 32Kg gets 3 - 3 1/2 packs per day. I generally go by looking at the condition of the dog :)

I give them Fragaria to reduce the plaque on their teeth and they both get recreational marrowbones.

I feed my westie 1/2 pack per day with a little biscuit which I was told he doesn't need. He also gets some treats during the day. Not had any problems and has a great coat with nature diet.

HI

Thanks for your reply, did Bailey used to suffer with stomach trouble aswell? Hamish keeps getting upset stomachs on the biscuit complete kibble and the head nurse at our vets suggested Nature diet, i am currently feeding him the orange pack which is the chicken and tripe, i tried him with the original and he did not like it and the lamb 1 he was not fussed with either, do you stick to the same pack or switch around, what biscuit do you give Bailey with his nature diet? Is Bailey very old, only Hamish is nearly 2 now and i don't know whether it matters on the age that they are to how much they need.

Thanks again
Helen

Bailey is nearly 2 aswell he hasn't had any problems with his stomach. He eats all of the packs but does prefer the tripe. I put a small amount of small bite mixer(pedigree) in it and have had no problems at first didn't think he was going to like it either but now licks his lips waiting. Good luck.

We used to feed our seven year old soft coated wheaten terrier on a packet of nature diet but we found that her teeth were harder to clean that before. So now we give a 1/3 of a pack of nature diet and add nutro senior matinence, easy green (because she gets hot spots) and two tablespoons of natural yoghurt. We also give her fagaria when she needs it. And give her dental chews.

Hi

How much of the nutro senior do you add to the nature diet, is it just a handful of biscuit per meal? This is what i was concerned about keeping the teeth clean as it is the biscuit that i always thought cleaned the teeth, where as the softer food clings more to the teeth.
What sort of dental chews do you give, Hamish has the denta stix.

Thanks

We give Rosie about 164g which if you use the measuring cup that comes with its one cup full. (You can get the cups at shows) The way we worked it out was just by eye. We looked to see how much we thought she should eat and if we thought she needed more biscuits that soft food we increased one and decreased the other. I personally don't think that you class a westie as a med dog, well; they are certainly not as big as wheatens. Try contacting nutro at http://www.nutro.co.uk you may be able to contact them and explain that you would like to feed them both and see how much they recommend you feed. You can of course just add a handful of biscuits. As for dental chews we try and feed the natural chews which I cant remember what they are called but you can find them at shows. But we do also feed denta stixs. You can also feed raw bones that you might be able to get from your butchers (not cooked!) as this will help remove the plaque. We have found that a good tooth brushing once a week is enough to keep Rosies teeth clean. If you do find that Hamish's teeth are dirty and you can't brush the plaque away, you can buy fagaria at http://www.dorwest.co.uk under the homoeopathic range. It wood strawberry and is brilliant for softening the plaque enabling you to them scrape or brush the rest away. If you need any more help or if you just want to know who my wheaten does on it, you can PM me or email me at sarah_watkins_@hotmail.com Good luck :)
