Has anyone had any experience of arranging a private home visit with a Behaviourist/Trainer?
We just feel we would like someone to come to our home and guide us generally in areas where needed.
What sort of things do they do?
Were you satisfied?
How long were they with you?
Did you see a difference in your dog's behaviour?
Any ideas of possible costs involved?
Thank you
Hi guest
A lot would depend on the problem, owner expectations and relationship with the dog, home environment etc
Some will want a full case history, if there is a big behaviour problem, whereas others will just assess and suggest training programme or management techniques/possible options
I've shadowed several behaviourists and did a follow up and clients seemed satisfied, although one couple had to get a second behaviourist after the first had suggested an option that to be fair sometimes works, but in that particular case did not. One owner was incapable of following the behaviour programme and so ended up putting her cocker into rescue sadly, but that was not the fault of the behaviourist ;)
Depending on the problem they may be there for up to 2 hours, sometimes a bit longer.
Usually they will back up the advice with email or phone support.
Some insurance companies will pau costs. These can vary from £10 or so for a trainer (per hour for one to one) to starting from say, £60 for a behaviourist (roughly speaking) but it varies from area to area as well as from behaviourist to behaviourist!
Do ensure your behaviourist is reputable and experienced, these days they should do more than talk about pack hierarchy etc. Try www.apbc.org.uk or www.ukrcb.co.uk or www.apdt.co.uk to start.
