Hi Purplenikki, instead of me rhyming off all the things you need to know about, the best thing to do would be to look at the page entitled Breeding. At the top there is a very comprehensive guide to putting your dog out to stud. However the first thing to know is that stud dog owners rely upon bitch owners getting in touch with them, not the other way around. It is the bitch owner that does the choosing, and they choose from the best they can possibly find. So your dog would have to be very special indeed, for anyone to pick yours over any number of top quality show dogs and Champions.

Have a read of the first post on the 'Breeding' forum of this site. Remember, using your dog at stud means that you are morally responsible for the well-being of all his puppies, and should be prepared to take any back at any stage of their lives (as should the the owners of the bitches he serves), and are as likely to find yourself with legal issues if his progeny aren't up to scratch.
Make sure he has passed all his breed-relevant health checks, whether they are hip-scoring (a must in most breeds), eye-testing, Doppler-testing, BAER testing, vWD clearance etc etc. If he does well in the show-ring or in the working field, owners of bitches will ask if they can use him.
Hes a bit young at the moment, some breeds are used at stud as early as 10 months old, you need to get him health tested and you need to show him before anyone takes an intrest in using your boy at stud :)
firstly read the first post on the breeding forum entitled "should i offer my pet dog to stud"
your dog should be a good example of his breed with good conformation to the kc breed standard and a healthy ,sociable, example, he should be free from faults of the temperment ,and hereditory health defects, these defects vary from breed to breed and testing is required the normal tests are hip scoring, eye testing and heart testing, you will need to check with your breed club if there are anymore appropiate tests.
If possible you should contact your boys breeder for advice or failing that your local breed club :)

Depending on the breed some breeds should not be used until much older for example Cavaliers should not be used until they are at least 3 & only after they have been MRI scanned not something that can done by a GP vet there are only two vets that have scanners in England
thank you i have read the one you said i have alot to do but i think he will make a great stud dog thanks

How can you tell if your dog would be a
great stud dog?

At 7 months you would need to be a clarnoyent as at this stage he is far from mature and can only show promise. He may not fulfill this and make a good adult dog.
I have a six month old pup I also have a 5yr old bitch who has just been in season and the pup never as much went near her not even sniffed at her, so mine is very immature not that i was going to use him.
If i were you i would get your boy trained up and shown a little before thinking of breeding. If he is a good physical example of the breed he will be placed well.
After some very good placings you can then get all the relevant health tests done for his breed, hip scoring, eye testing etc etc.
After you have completed the above you could then go on to research breeding, the ins and outs, study breeding lines and how genetics work.
Then once you have sufficient knowlege, your boy has passed his health tests and has been proven to be a good physical example you could stud him out to a bitch that will complement his breeding.
Its a very long drawn out process but worth it in the end.

Remember that if your dog is that good, they will come to you and you won't need to do anything to find suitable bitches. I can't stress enough the importance of health checks.
