My little Ollie is very ill.  I have just returned from the vet with one sad little puppy (15weeks). Severe wretching (constant) distended tummy, very hard and painful. He has a slight temperature, droopy eyes and doesnt want anybody around him. Vet says not torsion but says it could still happen, and I have to phone him immediately any change regardless of time during the night. This is going to be one very long night. He was given a very stingy anti-inflammatory injection and we have to go in 1st thing in morning.  I am now getting paraniod of his every whimper. Please can you tell me what I should be looking for.

Try not to worry Kay. I know thats easier to say than do but the chances are that if it has not yet twisted then it won't. Keep him quiet. Is his stomach hard? (Build up in pressure?) If it turns over then it will be urgent! Keep your vet's out of hours number handy and see how it goes. It would be nice if he is sick because this would take the pressure away. If it were me I would sit with him all night, just in case. If he gets very distressed then thats the time to panic.

Hi John, Thanks. His stomach is very hard and distended and also seems painful to touch. He has been wretching constantly since around 5pm, without being sick or bringing up bile. He is a pitiful sight, but sleeping at the moment. My vet did say the bloating could be that with wretching so much, he has taken in a lot of gas/air. I hope so. But he did not rule out that torsion may occur and that he would be better at home with me but wants him back in surgery 1st thing in the morning. Thankfully, I have an excellent vet, and I have his home phone no. so can contact him directly during the night, if I have to. And yes, I will be sitting with him all night. I am finding it difficult to take my eyes off him and am watching for the slightest movement. Paranoia has well and truly set in.

While typing this the poor little mite has just sat and wet himself, he didnt even stand up for a pee, and I had to lift him out of his puddle.

It sounds awful :( Poor little thing. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you both

Poor soul! Having dogs can be so hard at times. Sleepless nights, worried sick. But they give us so much love that we would put up with any amount of that just to have our dogs around us.

Hi all, many thanks for your concerns. I still have a very sick puppy, but no torsion thank goodness. Went back to vets in the morning, still very painful and bloated stomach, but temperature was down, due to the AB injection, so now on a course of AB's, though vet not sure that there is any infection. Ollie has a stomach the shape and size of a football, which is making the most awful noises. Vet seems to thinks that he is absolutely full of air, which is very painful. So he is now on Tagamet 3 times a day. He is not on  painkillers as the vet says we need to gauge the amount of pain he is in, since there is so much space is his tummy Torsion could still happen, and if on painkillers he wont show the pain and I wont be able tell. I just wish I could do something for him. He also has a very sore throat with all the wretching.

Update on Ollie, now renamed 'O Smelly One'  The Tagamet seems to be working. Which means Ollie has been suffering form either indigestion or heartburn, (didnt know dogs could suffer from this) He is now releasing some of his gases and the smell is glorious, on a par with muck spreading, :D but his discomfort is also eased and seems a lot brighter than he has done for the past three days.

Do you remember in "All Creatures Great and Small" Kay, they sorted a cow by sticking a knife in it to let the pressure out?

If the gas is being released then it sounds all over bar the shouting (Or smelling ;) )

John, now you mention it I do remember something like that, I also vaguely remember another peiod drama where a knitting needle was used to ease a sheep. I have spent 3 nights sleeping with him and I still find it hard to believe that indigestion can make a puppy so ill. I must admit, I seriously thought I was going to lose him.

The smell I can live with, he is on the mend. Coal fire going like a furnace and windows wide open :D

oops, have visions of little black lab propelling across livingroom floor at twice the sound of speed, just waiting for the 'boom' .  You always manage to put a smile on my face John, just what I need at the moment. :D :D

Ollie now firing on all six cyllinders again, rampaging round house like an idiot. Air still wonderfully aromatic, and my only concerns now are about the ozone layer :D. Many thanks to all for your support
