Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Upending her water bowl

My parents have an 11 week old golden labrador puppy. She does seem to be improving in most areas-toilet training, play biting etc. However, there is one recurring problem they can't resolve with her. If she is not the centre of attention at any given time, she overturns her water bowl. It doesn't matter if it's in her crate or on the kitchen floor.  Presumably she does this for attention?

Any suggestions on what to do to cure her of this habit would be much appreciated.

If you don't want it then don't reward it! In other words, ignore it! Any reaction from you and she has achieved what she wants. My Anna uses this trait to inform me when her water bowl is empty! She picks it up and throws it at me!

Mine dig in their water bowl. Its kind of funny to watch thats probably why they get away with it. Try getting her a heavier bowl that she cant lift that might work

get a bowl on a stand so that she can't lift it out - it worked for one of mine who LOVED to paddle in the water :)

Luna did this as a puppy too.

After I got her an elevated bowl, she doesnt do it anymore.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I'll pass this on to my parents.

I've had a few swimmers in water bowls too. :) Try a heavy ceramic bowl that doesn't have a rim to lift by or your parents could just put a heavy stone in the present bowl (remember though that the stone will have to be washed regularly).

All of mine have in the summer, Beth would in the winter too given the chance! Labradors love water!

my little labrador boy loves his water bowl and sometimes tips it up then lies in  the puddle! we have always ignored it really and he doesnt do it much anymore but upended it all the time when he was very small. he just kind of grew out of it really. he likes to lie with his feet in his bowl. i think he would like his own indoor pool

I got mine a paddling pool and he prefered this to his water bowl after and he stopped.

I got it from Toys R us but I think its actually a sand pit but its made of tough plastic instead of that flimsey stuff which he could burst!
