Why has my golden retriever's nose changed from a lovely black to a pinky/brown?
- By liberty Date 19.12.04 21:44 UTC
I'm sure this has been mentioned on here before, and is called 'Snow nose' or 'Winter Nose'. Put either in the search option and you should find plenty of information about it.

It can also be age related too, Bree's nose once shiney and black is pale pink now all year thru ;)

Winter nose can sometimes be rectified by adding seaweed/kelp to the diet over the Winter months (Not summer as it can cause overheating).  Dorwest Herbs sell kelp tablets.

My toy poodle's nose has done this too.  She's only just over a year old, so hasn't really experienced another winter yet.  Does it mean there's something wrong or is it harmful?  We don't mind what colour her nose is so long as she's ok.

So does that mean it could change back then? Does anyone know why it does this?
- By Blue Date 21.12.04 22:51 UTC
It generally comes back when the lighter nights come again.

Kelp is the remedy for turning a pink nose back to black, but as someone already stated you should only use it in the winter.

Sefa is now 2 her nose turned from a beautiful black to quite pink at about 12 months it has stayed that way ever since. The vet suggested that I use Vetzyme tablets which she is on now, I'll try these for a couple of months if no change I'll try the kelp tablets. Thanks for the tip.

Feeding your dog from a plastic dish will cause the pigment to change colour. Try switching to a stainless bowl or ceramic.

Thats a new one on me all 4 of my cavaliers have plastic dishes & their pigment is fine even in the 8 1/2 year old !

It's not harmful or mean that something's wrong though?
- By darekennel [us] Date 23.12.04 13:39 UTC
Perhaps plastic effects certain breeds more than others. ??  It is well known amongst Golden breeders and exhibitors in the US that plastic will cause the pigment to change. I know first hand. I changed to stainless and have had the darkest noses around! :-)

My Malamute has ALWAYS had food and water from a stainless steel bowls and his nose has changed colour. I fear that the plastic bowl thing is a fallacy ;)

My goldens do have Stainless steel bowls but it has made no difference whatsoever.
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 24.12.04 08:49 UTC
Ellie has always had a stainless steel bowl, so its not that.

Here's a similar question - does it happen with eye pigment as well as I've noticed the last 2 winters my whippet girls' eyeliner has faded quite a bit in the winter.
