My Springer Spaniel has been in the vets' hospital for 3 days now and is on a drip. I was told yesterday the she has Parvos. The vet has been very reluctant to give me any information other than that it's a very contagious disease that could be fatal and it affects the stomach, intestine and heart. When I ask him if she is going to be ok he just keeps saying "I think so".
Im really really worried that she is going to die. Does anyone have any experience of Parvos? PLEASE HELP!!!
Thank You, Vikki

I lost my dog to a virus 2 weeks ago although the vet hasn't confirmed it was Parvo.
She started with a temperature on the Sunday and Monday I took her to visit the vet who gave her a antibiotic injection saying she had a temperature, I then took her back on the Tuesday when he took her temperature again he said that it had dropped slightly anbd gave her a course of antibiotics.
She didn't want to eat had no life in her and wasn't interested in anything or anyone.
I took her back Thursday morning told the vet I was not happy and he kept her for blood tests, which didn't show anything other then raised liver enzymes which he said was because she was fighting an infection.
He took xrays which showed nothing and then put her on a drip.
Friday morning started to perk up and then friday evening started with Diahorea and sickness with blood in them.
The vet gave her an anti toxin on friday evening to try to stop secondary infections.
Sat morning still no change and still on drip then sat night she passed away.
I am extremely upset and can't seem to get it off my mind.
She was only just 1 year old.
How old is your dog?
Where do you live?

Im really sorry to hear about your loss.
She is about 18 months old, we live in West Yorkshire. Ive only had her 2 weeks, the previous owner told me she was up to date with all her vaccinations, but obviously not. She has been on a drip since Tuesday and hasn't eaten or drunk anything since Monday. The vet's hinted that it might be better to put her to sleep, but I just can't face to give up on her. Does anyone know how long Parvos takes to fight off?? Or if it goes the other way, how long it takes to take their lives?? And does anyone know what the chances of survival are? Is recovery rare?
Vikki

Thank you for the link. Im not too hopeful to be honest with you Sadie. The vet told me to phone at 2pm to check how she was, and when I phoned, they asked me to go and see her when I finish work later on this afternoon. I asked if she would be coming home tonight and they said no. I haven't been yet, but im on my way soon. When ive been to see her in last 4 days, she hasn't even moved, apart from her eyes. Im very very sad and just hope she's not suffering too much.

Oh dear Vikki I am so sorry, doesn't sound too good I know how you feel as it is only 1 month since I lost Skye.
What type of dog is yours?
I wasn't allowed to go and see Skye whilst she was in the vets as he told me that she could cause her to dislodge the drip and if that happened then he would lose the dog.
What has been your dog symptoms apart from being off it's food?
Hope when you see her tonight that she has made an improvement.
Thinking of you

Bonnie as survived!!
I went to see her at the vets on Friday and the vet said he was going to take her off the drip, but keep her in, and see how she went on. On Saturday there was still no change, she was still lifeless and the vet wanted to keep her in for a 5th night. But she wasn't on a drip and I just had to make sure she didn't get too dehydrated and she kept her tablets down. So I took her home. On Saturday night she was still lifeless. Then on Sunday when she woke up she was full of beans and back to her old self! I couldn't believe it! Im over the moon to have her back. Although it doesn't make up for all the other dogs that have died from Parvos.
