My 7month old GSD can eat and eat but not put on weight we have been feeding her on chicken and beef with Dr Johns dries food and she is fed 3 times a day. I fed her about 20 mins ago and she has just opened the fridge and eaten 2 very big bowls and chicken mince. Yesterday she ate a whole loaf of bread and crakers she stole from the side. She has been wormed 3 times in the last 3 months with panacur. Today i bathed her and you can see all her ribs and backbone does anyone have any ideas why she may not be putting the weight on. We are thinking maybe a visit to the vet is needed as were starting to worry its something more serious

Hi,
Think I'd be going to the vet - get bloods done for pancreatic disorders, etc - common in shepherds . If eating well (bingeng even) and not putting on weight she can't be getting the best needed for her development from the food she's taking in :( although over eating is likely to cause runny motions too.
My youngster is currently too thin, can't body her up and she's a bit loose at the toilet but not so bad as "dire rear" ;) however she is a picky eater so I know bingeing isn't behind her current problem.
Worming 3 times in 3 months sounds excessive - remember that worming is a strong medication and can't do dogs much good if overdone. Some parasites are not killed off by one brand and while it may be a vet would recommend a subsequent wormer I think 3 lots so close together particularly of same brand is probably dangerous :(
Good luck, HTH,
Regards, Teri ;)

Have you tried supplementing with probiotics (fridge section of health shop) and digestive enzymes?
The vet told us to worm her every month till shes 8 months old then every 3 months. Ill try those rose but i think ill also take her to the vet. Hopefully ill get a appointment before xmas

Monthly worming of pups is the normal thing to do, and recomended.
I would be wrrying about overactive Thyroid also. Definately needs testing at the vets asap.
Shes been to the vet this morning he said she is slightly under weight but that may be due to her always running round and burning everything she eats off he has taken some tests and is going to try and get them back fr tommorow for us

I have to worm my dog every month. The vet said that it was ok to do this, so I wouldnt worry about the ammount of worming your dog has had. As people have said, best to get some blood work done at the vets to find out there isnt a problem. I remember one of my mums freinds BC's would not put on weight, and everything was healthy with her. As it turned out she was eating her food too fast apparently. She changed her feeding routine to a Kong with dry food in, and she put on weight within a couple of weeks, and was the right weight within about 6 weeks.
HTH
The vet has said nothing wrong was found and it is just because she is a active dog and to change her food to something for working/active dogs because then she is getting more from the food instead of burning it all off. Im glad it is nothing serious though.

What are her stools like? A sign of pancreatic insufficiency is soft stools, a lot of it and putty or yellow in colour.
