One of my neighbours called in today to ask my advice about a puppy she is thinking about buying.

I believe from the information I have been given the breeder sounds reputable although I know nothing about the breed or any breeders.

She was asking what is an appropriate price.. I do not really have a clue myself.

She said she has spoke to 3 different breeders 2 of which don't show etc and all three quoted between £1700-£2200

Is this the norm and if this breed does have 3-4 puppies all be it by section why would the be this price?

We are not talking about show potential but pet puppies.

I think picked up the Our dogs 5 mins after she had left and there is about 4-5 litters in it so I don't think they are in short supply..

Can anyone fill me in? Does this price seem the norm ?? I am not saying whether I agree or not just wondered why they would be so expensive.

it wood all depend on wot kind o bull dog n her location!

Well i would no longer say they are a rare breed, the price can be from £1800 up to £2500, recently saw one for £2700 , its all about supply and demand and what people are willing to pay.  I have no idea why breeders put such a high price on these puppies, they can have whelping problems yes, but a c-section only costs what other breeders would pay for any other breed and you rear and watch them the same as any other breed.  Be very careful who your friend buys from, there are no known health tests for this breed, personally in my opinion they should be heart tested, hip scored and eye tested, but who is going to be the first breeder to take their dogs for these tests and the score comes back 50/50?

JMHO, I would not buy any dog of any breed whose parents have not been health tested, but that would just be another reason to push up the price of a Bulldog, but again thats just my opinion.

I hope you get more replies to this question blue as I too would like to know.  Its like why do you see adverts where bitches are more expensive than dogs, certain colours more expensive than others ? .

As stated its all about supply and demand ;) i think the price of the Bulldog is a joke but until people refuse to pay it, the high price will still remain.

If I was paying more than £2000 for a dog (And I wouldn't anyway, I don't pay that for a car let alone a dog!) I would be expecting it to be titled by the time it was a year old  - guaranteed.   Prices like these shouldn't surprise me to be truthful after having tried to buy a moggy kitten this year and prices for those range up to £150 (Yes! for a moggy!).    And they're getting that price too!

Thanks Everyone. :-)  for replying.

I was to be honest not sure what to say to her ( my neighbour) and I still really don't as I just could not justify myself paying that price for a pet quality to be honest. I have paid large prices for one or 2 of my bitches but they have been older and show quality but even then not eveb near £2000..  I still think that to charge this price people should be getting a 100% top puppy and I would imagine the courts would agree if ever a problem arose.

Thing is I think ever good breeder sleeps with their puppies for the first 3 weeks etc all are subject to c-sections etc so a bulldog breeder doesn't do much more than any decent breeder.

My last 2 litters was a litter of 2 and a litter of 3. One died in the litter of 2  a puppy in my breed sells for around £550 , you know people often say they cant break even on a litter of 6 can you imagine trying to break even on my last 2 litters.  I don't even think about the costs really as I cannot buy the pick of a litter elsewhere and I can in my own. So for me if it cost me £1500 to breed a puppy then that would meet my intention but I could never sell at what it costs me.

I am into my singleton litter by at least £1200 and I am bottlefeeding  this £1200 is before adding any raising costs that was just in travel, stud fees, premate tests and s c-section.    She is worth all that to me as I want this breeding so much but I would only be able to sell her for £550 if I was to sell her. ( I am not I have to add but just giving an example)

Anyway not sure if we are much further forward I guess if the demand was high and the puppies were low that will soon turn around as there were a few litters to be had now. I guess they have become popular sadly with the money makers and this is why we are seeing the increase of puppies. Hopefully not to the detriment of the breed..

Thanks everyone. & Merry Xmas.

I said I would go back to her today but I haven't got much to add I guess.

The average price is £1800 though at the moment there are quite a few litters around so
prices are being forced down.

I always thought it was a high price but with now having bulldogs I can understand to a certain degree
why they cost so much.
We have tried to mate my bulldog bitch 3 times and 3 times she has missed and this is a normal thing so they are harder to get into pup.
IF your lucky enough to get a litter you stay up with the litter for the first 3 weeks at least of the pups lives
and putting the bitch to the pups every 2 to 3 hours,it is hard work and to lose a litter isnt unheard of.

If you need any help at all in finding a puppy please let me know as I do know of a few breeders with pups.

Anyhow once you have spent your money on a bulldog you never regret spending it and it doesnt even occur to you how much you spent :-) they are WONDERFUL.

Is this not the same with most other breeds??

Yep certainly is.

Didn't know there was another way of raising and caring for newborns :D   also didn't know there were breeders putting a "charge" for their own labour on the litter  but then I've never tried to buy a Bulldog ....... even if I wanted to don't think I'd be able to afford one!

there are many breeds where the bitches are clumsy or not the most natural or doiting mothers and even in my own breed that are very natural and usually very good mothers needing little interference acidents can happen, adn a breeder will almost always be within eardhot for the first few weeks.  I still fail to understand how the breed can justify the kind of prices that would buy you foru pups of most breeds, even those in the hard to whelp/mate breeds with small litters.

I watched a programe about this breed. It was an American breeder. She said you are lucky to get pups to survive in this breed. They often die in the first weeks of breathing problems. The mother can never give birth or tend to them naturally.
She sold hers at almost $3000.00.
I felt so sad about this. Why on earth do we interfere so much with these poor animals. Why breed health problems into them.

A friend of mine who breeds Bulldogs lost her bitch last year on the operating table whilst having a c-section, five out of the 10 puppies born survived, she was lucky :(
