Topic Dog Boards / General / Dogs in Banks?
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 19.12.04 20:38 UTC
I just wondered if any of you ever take your dog into the bank.  I was in my local HSBC the other day when a man walked in with his dog, went up to the form filling counter and filled out his slip, then joined the queue for the counter staff.  I was totally amazed (not in a bad way) as I would have thought that a bank would be a completely no-go area for dogs.  On my way out, I checked the door for signs saying "no dogs except guide dogs"...and discovered there wasn't one!

Now my reason for asking is that I quite often have to go to the bank and it becomes such a drama, now that I am at work in the afternoons - it either means leaving Millie (and then coming home and leaving her again later) or leaving the house for work earlier to go to the bank on the way, neither of which I like doing (I'm a wuss, I know, but she's my pal, we 'wanna be together" ;-) )

Taking Millie to the bank would be so convenient...its about a 15 minute walk (actually make that 25 if Millie's with me!) so it would mean she gets a 30-50 minute walk in the process, so more convenient in that respect, plus I don't have to worry about leaving her at home.  However if its completely not the done thing then I'm not going to even consider it.  In my mind, it isn't the done thing, and I would never dream of taking her in the bank - which is why I was so astonished that day.  But nobody batted an eyelid, there was staff standing around in the foyer at the time who didn't take any notice, the dog was small and I discovered that there were no 'no dogs' signs - so maybe I've had the wrong attitude - if you're just going to nip in, pay in a cheque and leave, your dog is small and well-behaved, and the bank do not have a 'no dogs' policy...then maybe its not such a big deal after all.

So I was wondering if any of you take your dog into the bank with you or whether this chap was a cheeky individual!

We live in Liverpool and there is no sign on our local HSBC either, i think that this particular cashier was a crank!!!
- By kayc [gb] Date 19.12.04 21:07 UTC
Tia is my everywhere dog at the moment. The only place she doesnt go is the supermarket or foodshops. She goes into the chemist, papershop, bank, and anyplace that has wide enough isles for a wagging tail. In my bank they all make fuss of her and the chemist always gives her sugarfree treats. My bank is the Bank of Scotland and has no signs up either. Her favorite place is the pet shop, there is always titbits of food on the floor which need 'hoovered up'.  :D
- By Boxacrazy [gb] Date 19.12.04 21:25 UTC
Nope not a one off I've often taken my Boxers into my banks and
at my last jobs bank's branch too :D
It's ace and such a good socialisation place for them.

The only problem is when you take a wriggling 6 mos Pup into the bank and you
have to lift them up to the counter for the staff to coo over :D

Long may it continue!
Kirstine :)

- By digger [gb] Date 19.12.04 22:26 UTC
My last dog used to come into banks and post offices with me when I took her into work with me, also newagents (when they didn't sell food) - she was the sort of dog you could take anywhere........
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 19.12.04 22:28 UTC

- By kazz Date 19.12.04 22:58 UTC

Mine are regulars at the bank (NatWest) - If one or other isnt with us the staff are quite disappointed!
- By woodle83 [gb] Date 20.12.04 00:06 UTC
I ve taken my dogs to the bank(natwest) with me since they were pups, there are no sighs for nationwide either.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 20.12.04 09:01 UTC
I have been in Banks with mine, and any other shop that didn't ahve a no dog sign, though these are far an few these days, and now that I usually have five with me I leave them out6sdie if I need to run a quick errand (don't think anyone round my way would try pinching five wolfie looking dogs).

I take mine on buses trains and everywhere I can.  I find it a shame that places that have no logixal reason for a no dogs policy ban them, but sometimes I wonder if people have allowed their dogs to cock their leg?
- By carene [gb] Date 20.12.04 11:41 UTC
I would love to take my dogs to the bank and any other shops I could, but our shopping centre is indoors and no dogs are allowed except assistance dogs....:( :( :(
- By ClaireyS Date 20.12.04 11:52 UTC
My parents took their dog into Toys r Us and got kicked out :D :D
- By michelled [gb] Date 20.12.04 13:05 UTC
Flynn comes tpo work with me & his FAVORITE part of the  day is going to the banks. he goes to lloyds, natwest &  A&L. welcome at them all!
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 20.12.04 13:21 UTC
HURRAH!!

Thank you all, I had no idea it was okay, from now on Millie is about to become a regular to HSBC :-D
- By GreatBritGirl [gb] Date 20.12.04 14:29 UTC
Lloyds in northampton dont seem to let dogs in but Barclays do as long as they are on leads, so leo often goes in with us
- By katyb [gb] Date 20.12.04 23:28 UTC
our local lloyds accepts dogs but this may chaqnge if i take max again!!
- By Mary-Caroline [gb] Date 21.12.04 04:10 UTC
Our local HSBC and Lloyds let Cashie, our whippet in and make a huge fuss of him.  My fiance Ian (6'5") carried him in and everyone in the queue (all women) went "Aaaaaaaaaah", then all the tellers looked up and went "Aaaaaaaaaah".  Idiot Ian then jokingly held 2 fingers to Cashie's head in a armed bank robbery mimicry, and everyone laughed.  I could have killed him when he told me, it's like saying you've got a bomb on a plane "for a laugh"!  Still, no harm done.
- By ClaireH [gb] Date 21.12.04 08:56 UTC
Banks don't sell food or drink so there is no reason why dogs can't go in. My dog even came with me to a meeting with the bank manager! When Indy was a pup I used the bank to socialise him too. Tied him to the door, came back a few hours later and there he was, all socialised! Not really, only joking. :D
- By michelled [gb] Date 21.12.04 09:19 UTC
i can never understand why dogs arent allowed in the jobcenter???
- By ClaireH [gb] Date 22.12.04 13:20 UTC
In Margate, they used to be, until the Jobcentre had a plague of fleas! Then they were banned. I wouldn't take my dogs in there now, they might catch something!!!
- By Moonmaiden Date 22.12.04 13:24 UTC
All the job centres & DWP offices have horrendous problems with fleas & there is usually only the odd guide dog there I worked in lots of them & I am allergic to flea bites too Glad I don't have to work there anymore
- By michelled [gb] Date 22.12.04 13:35 UTC
oh!
- By Moonmaiden Date 22.12.04 15:55 UTC
LOLOL I know where they came from & it wasn't the guide dog or the staff ;)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.12.04 09:25 UTC
Jessthepest, I was just wondering why you thought it would not be OK to take your dog to the bank.  I do sometimes womder if we dog owners in fact play into the3 hands of those who would rather our dogs were not heard and hardly ever seen.  My own Dad only half in jest says that he doesn't think they should be allowed in any public places to annoy people, especialy in the Park when he is enjoying a Sunday walk.

I tell him that if that were the case we would loose half our recreational spaces, as dog woners are sometimes the only regular users, with others using them in good wether holidays, weekends etc.

I don't drive so I like to take my lot whreever I happen to need to go, as I feel any time I need to run an errand without them is a wasted opportunity for them to get an extra walk.  It is a bit like kids that don't go to restqaurants regularly, when they do they tend not to behave as well as those that do it frequently.  My dogs ae so well socialised that really nothing fazes them, and they are very blase about everything.
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 21.12.04 13:09 UTC
I've often wondered why dogs aren't allowed in shops that sell food.
At home people don't ban their dogs from their kitchens where food is stored, served and eaten so what exactly are the risks in shops ? - most food on sale is pre-packed anyway.
It's as if there's a general (mis)conception that dogs = germs = diseases. If that were the case all of us on here would be a very unhealthy lot ;)
- By Rudi [gb] Date 21.12.04 16:24 UTC
I've been taking my rottie and cocker spaniel in my local bank for over ten years, they're so used to it that they just lie down and wait... Last week I took my rottie puppy in and was told by the new bank manager that dogs weren't allowed, in case they poo on the carpet!  She reckoned that a dog had messed in one branch and it had had to be shut down while it was cleared up, I'm not entirely sure I believe her.  Now, I'm not anti-children or anything but I've watched them play far more havoc in places like banks than dogs do!  I shall just be using a different branch of the bank from now on!  I've always taken them in places like that - building societies, post offices and, of course, their favourite - pet shops.  I did try to take them into a PDSA charity shop but was told they weren't allowed in, which seemed a bit odd.
- By ice_queen Date 21.12.04 21:22 UTC
With all these dogs going into banks...do they each have their own account!!! :D

I never even thought about taking my dogs into a bank.  would be nice to have a dog with me when I walk up town with money.  Think I will ask my bank first...
- By ClaireyS Date 22.12.04 10:04 UTC
I went in the post office in my town centre yesterday and noticed a " no dogs " sign .
- By michelled [gb] Date 22.12.04 11:41 UTC
my post office does have such a sign....but they dont mind if you do!
- By ClaireH [gb] Date 22.12.04 13:17 UTC
Post offices often sell foodstuffs like crisps and sweets - that's probably why.
- By Sheena [gb] Date 23.12.04 20:19 UTC
I used to work in a bank and, yes, dog poo was left on the carpet.
- By FrankieB [gb] Date 23.12.04 23:48 UTC
Abbey are the only ones I know here who won't allow dogs in.

Ruby my 1st cocker pup was 'kidnapped' the 1st time she went in Barclays and the teller left a waiting queue while she took Ruby into the office to show her around.

Every time I go to the bank or building society now and I haven't got the dogs the staff all ask where they are.
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 23.12.04 23:52 UTC
Brainless - I don't know really! I suppose I just assumed that dogs aren't allowed in any shops/buildings of any kind - except Pets at Home!  I just thought that EVERYWHERE carries the 'no dogs except guide dogs' sign.
- By michelled [gb] Date 24.12.04 08:57 UTC
lol! if people TRY to tie their dogs up outside my shop i INSIST they come in!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.12.04 09:37 UTC
It is a shame as the more people don't take their dogs out and about (many just pop them in th3e car to take to wherever they walk them) then the more marginalised they become.

Have you ever noticed how well behaved and chilled out the homeless peoples dogs are?  They never have a lead on but don't wander off, and don't get into spat with the others.  Though their hygene sometimes could better.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.12.04 09:54 UTC
Those are very good points about the homeless people's dogs, Brainless. It just goes to prove the truth of what many of us believe, that a pup should be let off the lead as soon as it's had its injections so it doesn't have the urge to explore, and that the more a dog is taken out and about the better behaved it is when it's there!
- By Daisy [gb] Date 24.12.04 13:22 UTC
It's a pity that more owners don't have sufficient control over their dogs to stop them weeing/pooing inside shops etc :(

- By michelled [gb] Date 24.12.04 13:28 UTC

Wouldn't be brave enough for that of course, because of ca5s, but it is true, as two of my pups live in a cuk de sac which backs straight onto wooodland so they were used to being off lead all the time but still walking with their master.  He can walk them down the road offlead and they won't move away from him, though of course he doesn't, no more than the length of my drive in and out the car, but it gives me heart failure.
- By nitody [gb] Date 24.12.04 14:44 UTC
I take the puppy up to the delivery office whenever something is left there and all the posties make a big fuss of her. The first time i went in she was tiny (first time out after jabs I think) and I warned them that they wouldn't be so fond of my other dog (who despises postmen.. he can't understand why they try and break into the house each morning, but he soon sees them off with a good bark, growl and leap at the door). Anyway, the postie went to get my package, saw the address and said 'Oh yeah, we know your other dog, he's infamous at this office!'. Needless to say I blushed! I can't take him anywhere near post offices, the uniform sets him off!!
- By ClaireyS Date 24.12.04 09:04 UTC
It was the main post office in town, it doesnt sell any foodstuffs at all.
- By jessthepest [gb] Date 24.12.04 13:33 UTC
Yep, good points Brainless, now you mention it, I have seen many 'homeless persons' dogs in the past couple of weeks (just gone back to working in London) and they are all beautifully behaved dogs.

From now on, I shall make it my mission to take Millie into as many places as I can get away with - in fact yesterday I went to my corner shop - before I had either left her outside with another person, or carried her in (and struggled to cope with the dog and the shopping!) but yesterday I strolled in bold as brass  with her on the lead and asked for 20 Silk Cut Silver! :-D
- By jessthepest [in] Date 12.01.05 15:55 UTC
Hurrah!  I am proud to confirm that me and Millie have just returned home from a trip to the Bank! :-D
- By hairydog [gb] Date 12.01.05 21:29 UTC
Nope no problem for me I used to work in a bank and I never remember anyone saying they were not allowed. In fact I used to love it when they came in....

Also we can take our lad into our local Garage/shop, when we go to get a paper in the morning, the other day he was sniffing the sweets, I told him to leave them and the chap behind the counter, said,to" leave them or your Mum with stop your spending money!!!"
