I was told (to my surprise) today that dogs should not eat regular turkey...apparently it is too hard for them to digest. Ihad been looking forward to gving them some on Christmas day as a treat.  Anybody know for sure?

Turkey is turkey is turkey. I don't think there's any such thing as 'regular' turkey. Relax - give your dog a Christmas treat (but no cooked bones, of course!).

If your dogs aren't used to rich meat the white is better for them, my GSD has a cast iron stomach so she will be having some extras from a meat esting friends turkey

by regular turkey I meant off the bone, just cooked..not processed as in some dry dog foods....  and yes it's me, the one who was paranoid about giving chicken wings that had previously been frozen!!  Thanks, I'll stick to the white meat......

i will just say mine suffer from "wind" after any form of turkey....& a very smelly wind at that!!! thanks just wanted to share!

Turkey can be too high in fat for dogs with pancreatic problems (which you may not know about) and excessive wind can be a sign that the fat content is too high (believe me, as one whose suffered with gallstones, you recognise the symptoms, and I wouldn't want my dog to suffer that discomfort :( )

Which is why I would only feed the average dog the white meat, luckily our GSD has a cast iron stomach & rarely has any digestive problems I mean rarely as in once in the 8 years. But most dogs would find the dark meat & skin a bit rich especially if the bird isn't organic & been fed to bulk up. Mine I must admit prefer chicken

I did have a cat that would sell his soul for chicken & when I was given a small turkey(at least the giver told me so) for the dogs(before mirowave days)I put it in the oven to cook & the cat was almost trying to slither into the oven(I rarely cook meat as I don't eat it & wouldn't have fed raw back then)This totally confused me Until I too the bird out & yes it was a large chicken ! Dogs & cat enjoyed it just the same tho'

Mine has raw turkey quite regularly - No ill effects :)  She also has chicken, poussin and duck! - All Raw Though ;)

Oscar has problems with Turkey if given over a few days, but given as a treat is fine for him.  I suppose it depends on the consitution of the dog.
