Topic Dog Boards / Health / pacing, panting and whining

I am waiting for my vets to open, but just wondered if anyone had experienced these symptoms with their dog.  My girlie  is a GSD 21 months old and last night started to pace and whine, she is also panting constantly. She cannot seem to settle and appears to be very agitated and upset.  She is drinking and eating ok, I'm very worried about her.

This sounds like the sort of behaviour during first stage labour, is there any chance she could be pregnant?  I would certainly get her to the Vet, as this is the sort of responce you would expect if she were in pain.

Hi thank you for such a quick response.  I am 100% certain that she isn't pregnant as she is with me almost 24/7 and I am the only one who walks her, so I definately dont think it's that. My vets open at 9.30 so I'll get her there a.s.a.p.
thank you.

When did she last eat?  Personally I don't think I would wait until surgery opened, as you may be dealing with bloat.

Hi
Vets cant see us until 5.50 this evening.  I have just taken her for a walk and she seemed perfectly normal, but when I approached home she couldn't wait to get in and started whining again. Sorry to be ignorant but I dont know what bloat is? thanks for reply.

[link] http://www.canismajor.com/dog/bloat.html [/link]  Damn - never can get those links to work - this is a link to tell you about bloat - something as a GSD owner you really should know about - if not now, for the future.....

I read your post and the first thing that came to my mind is bloat too.

Its when the stomach turns itself inside out I think thats the best way to describe it. But it is VERY dangerous and can happen so fast I would tell your vet your that you think she is showing symptoms of bloat and they should fit you in asap!!!!!

Hopefully its just an upset stomach

Best of luck

Jay

Jay,

Please read the link, the dogs' stomach doesn't turn itself inside out ;) it becomes twisted

Thank you so much to all of you who replied to me today. I got macey to the vet and it was good news.  Apparantly she is having a very strong phantom pregnancy, the vet could hear her whining so loudly he saw us straight away, he gave her a thorough check and has said that this is what it is.  He also gave us a mild sedative as she is so agitated, it will help us all to sleep tonight if we need to use them, the vet said it may last a week and the best thing would be to have her spayed, as I am not breeding her I think this is the best thing, her last season was only 7 weeks ago so we have to wait til january.
I would also like to say thank you to those of you who have alerted me to the condition of bloat, I have read the sites and am now aware of what to look for. I must confess I had not heard of it before, so many thanks.
