Please help!!  Has anybody any ideas how I can encourage my GS puppy to "go" when we are out walking.  I have had her since she was 7wks and she has been going out for walks since she was 12wks, she is now 14wks old.  She gets regular walks, the first one being at 4am (when hubby gets in from work) and the last one before I go to bed around 11pm, however she wont do anything while she is out and waits until she gets back and goes in the kitchen! (luckily never in the rest of the house)  I scald her but wonder if she even knows what shes being told off for as Ive read so many times that there is no point telling them off after the event!  How can I help her (and me!)

She' still very young, and she may well find the big wide world just too scarey a place to leave a 'calling card' telling all the big bad doggies that she's there - it makes her very vulnerable.........  Does she get the opportunity to go in a safe enclosed space such as a garden?  This is the key to training her to go outside - plenty of praise when she does go, and hold off the scolding - it really doesn't do any good as dogs do not understand right from wrong, only that whatever they have done has made you angry, and this in turn can lead to other unwanted behaviours - like eating poo, and finding out of the way places to do it.  How long is she out for on these walks?  A young GSD doesn't really need regular 'excercise' as it can lead to joint problems - but she does need regular access to a safe enclosed space where she can learn it is safe and pleasant to releive herself.

Do you have a word for when you want pup to go- using the same word can prove very effective and when pup does go when you ask him to then lots of praise and maybe a small treat until it starts to sink in :)
