Topic Dog Boards / Health / Extended season?
- By Herbiedax [gb] Date 19.12.04 09:13 UTC
This is a strange one to me. One of our young daxies started  her first season exactly at six months and the bleeding lasted for approx one month. The strange thing is that since then she has remained as in season and people have mentioned at the shows " is she due". After finding spots of blood on the bedding I have pinpointed down to this wee bitch again. This is approx 90 days since the beginning of her first season. Any ideas? False pregnancy? another early season?

Herbie - I would get that checked out - it could be an infection in the womb.  That definitely shouldn't happen.  Jean

Hi, I don't want to frighten you but please take her to the vet. This sounds as if it could be an open pyometra. Hope not but please check. Let me know how she goes on. love Viv

Vivian - that's what I was thinkiing.  Herbie, is she drinking a lot?

Hi Herbie, Jeanlyon, lets hope we are wrong but providing caught early enough spaying should do the trick.

I nearly lost a Golden with Pyometra, but the symptoms were very obvious, heavy drinking, panting, straining to pee, however, I think this was a closed pyo, which is more dangerous.

Hi Jeanlyon, I know this is usaaly thee case but I had a young Dallie and apart from a odorous, reddish watery discharge ther were no other symtom's. Nobody can really say over the site, can we. Let's just keep our finger's crossed for Herbie that everything is ok. Viv

Thank you for your responses. The lass has no other signs or symptoms at all. She is happy, playing, eating and drinking as normal. I will give the vet a ring and see what they think, will let you know.
Thanks

Spoke to the vet who is not unduly concerned because of her being bright in herself. Possible other infection to be ruled out, or more likely a bitch with short odd seasons that will likely have problems mating at a later stage. So we will wait and see what happens over the next day or so.

I had a bitch like this, came into season 6 months on the dot (@october),  very light discharge and 21 days to the day when finished but then seemed slightly in season for another 3 months (according to dogs and her back end ;) )  then she came into season again, this time a definate no-one can miss it season - poor thing was cooling her rear in the snow   Vet seemed to think the first one was a false season (just for practice??) and the second was genuine. Her seasons after that followed the second dates and she was bred successfuly a couple of years later.

I would still keep a very close eye on your girl, Pyometra is very nasty.  It was what I was most worried about at the time.

There is info on the web about 'False Oestrus' in bitches at this site

http://www.ivis.org/advances/Concannon/england2/chapter_frm.asp?LA=1#Caveat

If you scroll down the list you will find 'Caveat: Normal Estrus versus False Estrus'

Thanks for that. This is almost an identical case, although our boys showed no interest after the first 6 weeks her rear tells a different tale. Funny how we first noticed her first season as bang on 6 months (19th September) now exactly to the day 3 months later the same.
We will take her to the vets tomorrow and see what happens.

Our Groenendael bitch had seasons every 4 months and they lasted for around 4 weeks a time - a real nightmare as she was almost constantly in season ( and we have an entire male here !)- we mated her at 4 years old and she had a litter of nine pups with no problems, since then her seasons seem to have regulated to a more normal pattern ( she has had three more since her litter) and they space out at between 6/7 months and last the usual 3 weeks

All my bitches to some extent have started with shoirt inter season intervals gradually going to the normal 6/7 month once fully mature.

My latest youngster has just started her third season at 15 months.  she was in at 7 months, then again 16 weeks later, and now 21 weeks later.  Her mother went 18 weeks and then 21 weks, and then 27 to 30+ weeks since.  My oldest bitch had her first three sesons 3 months apart, then four than five and I mated her when she had finally gone 6+ months.  the ones in between had also gone 4 to five months between first seasons then going on to more normal interals.

The only trouble I have had fertility wise was getting my champion bitch to accept mating, managed it on second attempt, but 154 months later having already had a litter, no way Jose!!! :(

My second eldest did have a prolonged season once, but went on to have a third and last litter befor being spayed.  I have had the eldest 3 spayed at between 5 and 7 years of age.

"154 months later "  Can't say I blame her really :D :D :D

Iips, that was 15 months.  154 months would be a very old doggie indeed.
