Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / castration to curb sexual activity

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can give me some information.

I have a Lhasa Apso who is 1 1/2.  He was castrated at 12 months old because he was very sexually active with any of my daughters soft toys.  He was performing the full act on them daily and became very agressive if we tried to take the toy away from him.  After the castration he seemed to calm down quite a lot, but gradually his behaviour is reverting back to how he was before the castration.  He is not allowed upstairs, but we have caught him on numerous occassions sneaking up the stairs in search of soft toys, though he just looks guilty now when we take the toys away and doesn't get aggressive. The other thing that seems to happen when he gets excited is that 2 lumps appear (that look like testicles) about 2" further down than the testicles used to be.

Can anyone tell me if it is normal for a dog to still be so sexually active after castration and what the lumps may be?

Thanks,

Sue

Yes Castrated dogs can still perform the act of mating.  the two lumps you mention are the Bulbis Glandis.  It is this swelling at the base of the penis that manintain the tie typical in the mated canine.  I must admit it does look like the dog has a second set of testicles :D

That's really interesting - I assumed my dog's testicles were still retractile - I had never heard about any other swelling!

It soes look rather strange if a male has got himself tied outside a bitch to see him with what looks like four testicles, most bizarre.  I had always assumed the bulbus gladis was a sphericle swelling until I had occasion to find out otherwise!  Often this swelling can be felt inside the sheath in a young excited dog.

I never knew pups so young could do this, until I tickled my little boys tummy, At 14 weeks Bulbis Glandis present and very noticable. I swore I could see a smile on his little face :)

Instead of taking the toy away from the dog - how about taking the dog away from the toy?  Either by having a short length of lead on him, or by enticing him away with a very special food treat?

PS castration does not remove the urge all the time - I had a castrated dog who would go bitching whenever the local farmers Rottweiler came into season......

Maybe you could let him have one special toy to have his wicked way with whenever the mood takes him :)
