max has been attacked in the park
took max over the common this afternoon and it was all deserted and he was having a lovely time. i had max on his lunge as we still havent mastered not running on dogs. anyway all of a sudden i saw a dog racing across the common at us max at first went to run at it then ran back at me he obviousley knew it wasnt friendly if i could of picked him up i would of it got to us and at first i thought it was going to be ok and i could see a man running across the field shouting at it it tryed to sniff max and max flopped on the floor and it sniffed him again the man continued to shout at it and as he got up to it he whacked it with a chain lead 'i said oh dont do that' and as i spoke max got up quite quickly as i had started to move and as he got up the dog launched at him and got hold of him behind his ear and shook him! max was screaming i was screaming and the bloke started kicking his dog. i am still shaking the man got his dog off by the scruff of his neck and turned on his heel and went no apology or anything. i still havent stopped shaking. i took max to the vet and they cleaned up his wounds and said he is lucky as they are very small with not much blood and didnt need stitching they said the kind of dog it was could of done a lot more damage if it had really wanted to but it didnt make me feel much better. i am sooo angry and if i ever see that bloke again or if i knew where he lied i would report him. people like that shouldnt be allowed to own dogs i dont know why it attacked max he was only getting up and already had been lying in a submission position. i have never known max go back to the car and get in so quick. i cried my eyes out in the vet like a big baby i think i was just shocked.

Hi Katy,

Poor you and Max :(  It sounds like this other owner is an absolute brute - small wonder his dog has problems.  Glad Max didn't need any serious treatment.

Regards, Teri

Scarey isn't it i worry about things like that, you just have to trust that people with dogs off lead are responsible. Hope you are both ok.

Its such a shock when something like that happens, our dogs are so dependent on us aren't they and yet we just can't protect them from everything.  I hope the man is thoroughly ashamed of himself for not staying and at least checking you were alright.

I know exactly how you feel because the same thing happened to my dog.     I am so afraid now of the younger one being attacked (because like yours she will run to any dog she sees thinking that it wants to play) that I have never let her off the lead and it isn't fair on her because she could do with a good run.     I am so afraid of her being attacked.    I don't understand people with dogs who tends to look for a fight, letting them off their leads in the first place.    There is no need for that man to treat his dog like that......he should just keep it under control.     I expect that you will be afraid to let your dog off the lead in case you meet up with him again.     It is such a shame, we should be able to enjoy our walks, not be on guard all the time.

Katy - so sorry about Max - it's every owner's nightmare. You'll just have to keep walking him round my way, as things like that are almost non-existent here :)

Hope that he's feeling better soon :)

So sorry about Max. Hopefully he'll make a speedy recovery and put it behind him.

How awful for you both - glad to hear that he wasn't badly hurt but the shock must have been awful.  I would have been in the same state as you.  Hopefully you will never come across him again.

I hope you have both recovered from such a frightening ordeal. Its he`s sort that give dog owners a bad name. Do you think it has happened before and thats why he made himself scarce.

I have just been out for a walk with Tyler and came across a guy with some sort of spaniel cross, as i was getting close i kept Tyler on my other side the guy said to me he won't bite but i still kept a distance and good job too as the dog started to bark agressively and show his teeth, as we passed the guy said it wasn't like his dog to do that . I just think if we had been any closer Tyler would have had a chunk bitten out of his face, Tyler just stood still which surprised me as he normally barks and goes wappy when another dog goes by. It just made me think what would i do if the situation had turned nasty.

katyb I think you should report this to the dog warden so that if anything happens like this again to anyone they have it on file. Hope your dog is ok and that it doesn't have any lasting affects on you or him.
Don't be put off from still going out just go somewhere different for awhile.

Hi Katyb, another thought, put some posters up in the area that you walk and warn people to keep their dogs under control if not 100% reliable. :-)
