I took Holly out for a walk after school despite the fact it was raining and windy and really cold. It was her time for a walk and I'm not a fair weather owner so we go out in all weathers. Holly managed to find a freshly manured flower bed right on the edge of the pavement and rolled in it

I've managed to bath her, some of you may know how hard that is, but the house still smells of wet, dungy dog :( :( :(

What is the best air freshner to use? I've got some liquid pet plug-in ones but the house is still ripe. If I can't find any better ones, Chris is going to buy her some wet weather over trousers and insits that I take her out when she's wearing them. :D :D :D

Fiona,
I am in complete sympathy with you!!!!!
Sunday morning I took the girls out for an early bike ride. At one point, I had to call Chienne to come from about 100 meters behind me. She happily raced up.....with her head, neck, & shoulders covered in grey muck. She had rolled in something very disgusting!!!!

When I hooked her to the lead about a half hour later, it had dried & she stank to high heaven. She was embarrassed by then & got all happy when I said "bath later for you." We got home...she was thrown in the tub first because it was making me nauseous after I shut the bathroom door. I had to shampoo her down 3 times!!!

Then gave Samma a bath and afterwards the two raced around in glee & high spirits. An hour later, Chienne came & lay next to me while I was on the computer. Sniff, sniff.....faint aroma still...so in the tub for two more shampooings.

Her collar was washed by hand & then thrown in the washer. It kept a faint reek to it, so I just went ahead & replaced it today. Unfortunately, it stank up my purse & car in the meantime...

Now, I"m not sure if it's just stuck in my nasal passages, but things are still a little damp & musty smelling around here. At least the sun finally came out. That might help a bit. Do you have any scent candles you can burn? That's what I've found works better than the sprays.

good luck from a fellow sufferer.

The best thing for getting rid of smell of manure, rotten animals etc that dogs have rolled in is............
Tomato Ketchup!
smother in ketchup, rinse and shampoo works wonders on most things, and its what a lot of people in USA use when dogs have been "Skunked"

Fiona, I'm going to build you a kennel & run for christmas, then you can do as I do. When I get home, I get out the hose and hose her down. She even cocks her back legs so I can clean the 'under-carraige', she has a shake and a quick towel down, then into the run. Takes about 3 minutes, and no smelly house, well, no more smelly than it usually is!

I might take you up on that Dave :D :D :D The horrible animal did it again this morning when hubby was walking her :D :D :D

I tried so hard not to laugh when he came home covered in manure as well, where she'd jumped up to give him a kiss when he bent down to take her lead of her :D :D :D

The only good thing is that she was a lot calmer when I cleaned her up today than she was yesterday.

Fiona,
Just curious, if she's on a leash, how is she getting a chance to roll????? As soon as that shoulder dips downward.....I'd be tugging :D

Sara,

She drops and rolls in an instance :D I didn't realise how quick she would be, but she won't be doing it again if I'm walking her.

Chris, like me, just wasn't quick enough :D

She'd be excellent in a fire demo for kids, eh.... Stop, drop, [$ roll motto :D :D :D Hopefully as she gets older, she'll become more of a connesseur & smell first to give you warning ]-)

When I was a kid our house backed onto a park, which had a big lake in the middle of it. People used to fish it and then leave the dead fish on the ground. The BC we had at the time used to roll in dead fish and fish guts at any and every opportunity. There's nothing worse than a fishy smelling dog covered in guts and scales.
- By emily [gb] Date 01.05.02 11:47 UTC
9thM I sympathise with that! Morris rolls in rotting dog fish EVERY time we go to the beach (every other day), the other days, he makes do with fox muck, or horse dung!! but a warm, fishy dog in the car is the worst. I usually drive with my head out of the window! (and with a forty year old mini with sliding windows, that is no mean feat!)
Emily, and 'Pongo Fishcake' as he is affectionatly known!

Buffy is exactly the same, she found a really black, sewer smelling stream over our local park and decided to go in it, she came out looking like a black dirty mop, it was digusting and if she can find it, which seems like she does all the time, foxes poo, thats her favourite, i am forever bathing her, i am going to get her one of those all in one body suits for dogs, for when it is really wet and muddy, or i will be bathing her every day, as she likes to sit on the sofa:D
- By nicki [gb] Date 01.05.02 17:15 UTC
Ollies favourite is fox poo, but he has once rolled in some sick (yuck !) and last week he rolled in some dog poo !!!

Ahhhh, the smell of damp dog etc. How I miss it ! :D

My bitch once rolled in something sooooo smelly and disgusting I didn't even hang about to look at what it was. She was frog marched back to the car, she had to walk to heal off the lead because she was so minging I thought if the lead touches her it will never come clean. Collar went in the bin. Poor dog has never walked to heal so well in all her life, she didn't dare move away from side. (Thankfully we weren't near any roads)We drove home with all the windows down, dog in back of car steaming with smell. Gave her 3 baths and could still faintly smell whatever her new scent was for a few days. Didn't know at the time that apparently tomato juice is very good but have remembered that ever since. When we got home I don't know who got to the bathroom first, her or me, think she was really regretting what she had done and couldn't stand the smell herself :D

Now she just sticks to good old cow pats, fox poo and horse manure. I tell you compared to what this stuff smelt of horse manure would have been a blessing :P

Perhaps it was pig poop...now that is one of the worst odors in the world. In Bitburg area, the farmers spray it as fertilizer on their fields in spring & fall. Horrible smell, worse than the bin-jo ditches & burning of the rice paddys in Korea. :(

Hey. I used to go out with a pig farmer and now find the smell of pigs vaguely romantic. ;)
- By eoghania [de] Date 02.05.02 12:45 UTC
I like pigs, especially when clean & healthy.... just neither of the smells of the wet or the "solid" they leave behind :(

Yep, no matter how bad you think you've got it, things can always become worse :D :D :D :D So never ever utter "At least it can't get any worse than this" ...believe me, Fate will hear ya [$ smite tcha down some more garbage :D :D :D :D In the movies, these words are always prophetic for the characters :) ])

I absolutely hate this bad habit that some dogs just simply adore. It is THE worst. One of my gitrls is so proud when she does it and just feels so ashamed after a bath and she is smelling sweet again.
- By eoghania [de] Date 02.05.02 16:20 UTC
Chienne's prissy & hates being smelly or dirty for long :D :D :D
- By Brainless [gb] Date 02.05.02 18:18 UTC
I think it is the second worst. My second eldest loves to do it, whereas her Mum and daughter hate to get dirty, and walk around puddles! My young Champion bitch isn't as bad as her Granny, but also indulges in rolling occasionally! so with mine it seems to be alternate generations! :D

The worst habit has to be SH@t eating!!!
