Hi everyone
Can anyone help? How do you go about getting days off for your kids if they are coming to a weekday show? I've got Manchester and Crufts on Thursdays and 2 off the children always come to shows with me.Is it best to be straight and honest with the schools or tell some little white lies?

We were always straight and honest to the Schools when my lot were Junior Handling.
There was no problem as the school felt it was another form of education and were very proud of them and announced any wins in School.
In fact Gemma was in the Semi's one year when she was due to have her first day at High School (like and induction day) and we mentioned it when we went to see the School and they had no problem whatsoever with her having the day off.

Ask at the school office for a 'holiday form' and fill it in with the appropriate details - it shouldn't be a problem unless the child has already had two weeks holiday during term time in that school year.
You are allowed two weeks and anything after that is at the descretion of the Headteacher - if he says No, you can still take the day off but it will be classed as an unauthorised absence (just like a child who is off ill but whose parents fail to ring the school or send in a letter upon the child's return). Parents of kids whose attendence at school is already very poor might have the unauthorised absence reported to an EWO (Education Welfare Office - or the Wag man as he used to be known).

For crufts and semi finals it was the truth....for any other show it was a white lie and me walking around the day befour feeling ill ;)
We are always honest about telling the head teacher. Erin does well in school and the they say if she works hard she can have the time off. { I know they just say that to wind her up!!!] We have already booked two days off for Crufts and the teachers are really proud of her for qualifying and say they will look for her on TV [they will be lucky]. I think they see it as another form of education and as she always takes in anything she wins and has to stand infornt of the class and explain what she did it is sort of.

Oh crufts I had my form tutor watching, luckily I wasn't on! :D This year I am in my AS levels and having two days off for crufts (they don't currently know yet, but will do the day before, my school can get abit funny so its a case of "they are having these days off for this reason" Normal shows its a phone call on route from mum saying "roxannes got a bad stomach" or her fave one "roxanne has serious period pains" THANKS MUM! NOT! :D

We combine the truth with little white lies!!!! My girls school are not overly impressed about time off for the shows despite their achievements and experiences gained which we feel form part of their life experiences.

At my school, mum just writes a letter in the week before, have done it ever since year 7 and am in year 12 now, tutor used to be a bit funny but now she has a dog and has seen me on the tv both her and the headteacher are fine about it! Infact this year the headteacher asked me how it went, and then got the papers down to our school! Very embarassing!
