When we had Kerry Blues, they did sometimes get a sort of hard elongated thing looking like a nail, which seemed to come out of an epidermal cyst. The best way I can describe it is looking like ergot on rye (no not that sort of rye, John...) - I did my degree in Agricultural Botany, and these trivia come flooding back sometimes.
I think that chocolate/liver/blue skins may be more sensitive to epidermal problems, and I wonder if this is a similar thing.
