I am interested to know about this as one of  our customers  has a Chocolate Lab (very large one) Who has a nail growing out ofhis back  Everyso often it  falls off, and then another one  gro9ws, but not straight away.
The vet has said it is  rare but not unheard of in labs.
Has anyone else come across it???

In which case. it's just a hind dew claw, and not that common in labs, but probably does occur.    He will just have to see that it doesn't grow too long, but it seems to be sorting that out by itself.    Very common in breeds such as Pyrennean Mountain Dogs etc, where I believe it's in the breed standard.

If the nail really is growing out of his back - gosh - Guiness book of Records here you come!!!

It's not that unusual Jo, A friend of mine had a claw growing out of her Sheltie's tail. She accidently pulled it out one day whilst groming and brought it to club to show me. some weeks later it had grown again!

I deffinatly said it right. It was out of the BACK!!!!!!!!! Half way between the fron and back legs at the top if you see what I mean!!!

Ok so that's two of you on the malt now, is it? :-) !!

When we had Kerry Blues, they did sometimes get a sort of hard elongated thing looking like a nail, which seemed to come out of an epidermal cyst.   The best way I can describe it is looking like ergot on rye (no not that sort of rye, John...) - I did my degree in Agricultural Botany, and these trivia come flooding back sometimes.

I think that chocolate/liver/blue skins may be more sensitive to epidermal problems, and I wonder if this is a similar thing.

Could be as you say Jo. This one was slightly hooked like a dew claw. It was attached although not firmly, in that you could wriggle it about.

Had the first Woodcock of the season yesterday but yet again Anna was the wrong side of the wood! I'm beginning to despair of her ever retrieving one! :( We only ever seem to see one or two the whole season.

Trouble is, with woodcock, you don't get enough for the dogs to get used to the scent.   There was one on the Shooting Dog Certificate day the other Saturday in Tandridge; I threw it out, and Albert brought it back to me, so I hope that's imprinted on his memory for the future!   Bless!

I was in exactly the right place last season Jo. I only saw one but then the *&%* gun missed! The season before we had two but again not where Anna and I were standing. It is nice to broaden their experience as much as possible but then, we have to settle for what turns up. It's lovely that Albert has had the chance so early, I bet he does not forget!
