Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Is it ok to have 2 bitches??
- By Jay [gb] Date 11.12.04 10:28 UTC
My weim maybe 3 1/2 weeks pregnant and our whole reason for breeding her is to keep a puppy (bitch).

The lady who drops her Burns food off said yesterday that we would be better keeping a dog as 2 bitches together can fight to the death but 2 dogs together is fine.

I would have thought this to be the other way around as dogs are more teritorial and also my parent own 2 bitches which are fine with each other but then one is a toy yorkie and the other is a staff.

Can anybody shed any light on this subject please as we really really wanted to keep another bitch.

Well I sure hope you can keep two bitches together, though breed does make a difference with some breeds being intolernat of their own sex.  I have five bitches five succeeeding genrations.

In my breed the only tine problemns seem to occur between bitches is with incomers that are of similar rank and status to one of the existing ones, it is less common with those born into the family, as a daughter would normally be below her mother automatically.

Hi Jay I have kept two bitches together without any problems both the same breed, but different ages my eldest was four when we got our second bitch and i can say the lived slept and was virtually tied at the hip, the only problem i found was i had to feed one in the kitchen and one in my hall as the eldest didnt like to share her food other than that there was never a problem

I'd be interested to hear what a weim owner has to say cos I believe they can be quite a dominant breed?

I'd be interested too Archer - I aways suggest that the owner looks to get a new dog as different as possible from the original, to limit the chances of the two bitches having a similar outlook on life (and there fore finding the same resources important) - ie, parents, breed, age, sex.......  So a litter brother or sister would be possibly the worst possible scenario, and mother/ daughter almost as bad......  I currently have two bitches - a 12 year old ESS x BC, and a 4 year old ESS - and even with those differences, there are still 'moments' that have to be carefully managed.....

Until recently we've only kept bitches together. We've kept unrelated ones (6 months apart in age), and mother-and-daughter (and my in-laws had a mother-and-daughter pair), and never had any problems.

From the experiences of the only Weim. breeder/owner I know I would also say a dog and a bitch are likely to be better (very like Dobes!).  Bitches can get very tetchy around the time of their seasons and mine have to be separated at this time to avoid fights.  We do have some Weim. owners on the board so I would take their advise if they have a few

We have 8 bitches at the moment. Four sets of sisters.
BUT would not advocate this for all breeds - it works for us!

I have 4 bitches and they are perfect together

My Bro keeps 2 unrelated Weimaraner bitches together, oldest one is spayed younger one entire, a few years age difference.  They are fine together, but the oldest one is very tolerant of "her pup" :D   The oldest one was brought up with other dogs so perhaps this has made a difference.

I don't think there's any hard and fast rule here, but a lot will depend on the two bitches temperaments and how they regard their owners, and how they've been brought up.

I think the breed makes a lot of difference as does how much you are in charge of the pack.

I have 7 bitch's living here ranging from 5 months to 12 years and apart from a hierarchy struggle that went on a couple of months ago, now resolved, between two bitch's, we have had no problems whatsoever, but then I am in charge and they know it.  No-one is allowed to go OTT at any time.

I do think you get an extra ear when you live with a pack of dogs, and always have that ear listening for a change of tone in their playing etc.

Mine are Border Terriers by the way, and they can have quite a dominant streak.

well so far so good apart from when mollie wants attention or lil wants to play ''bite mollies tail'' they seem ok
i feed them seperate and keep mollies toys away from lil

mollie is an 8 1/2 year old pom x terrier
and
lil is a 10 week old tibetan terrier who just wants to play play play

I think with an age gap that big it is unlikely you will get any dominance issues

the first week was a nightmare i had to watch them like a hawk as mollie kept growling at lil but slowly she has gotten used to her but i am still being careful as mollie could turn at any minute as she is a grumpy little so and so

I have kept Mother and Daughter BC and they got on fine, we also had an older lady in the house who sometimes used to get left out by them and altough they never showd any sighn's of it I was allways watching to make sure they didn't gang up on her.Viv

I have 3 gsd bitches, 1 lurcher bitch and 1 gsd dog (puppy), all get on great as they all know their own place in the pack and they like it that way. That way they know where they stand and how far they cant go.
If anything they play too much lol. They never fight, and would all be lost without each other. I have no problems whatsoever, good luck with your litter and keep us posted

I have 2 bitches and a dog. Both the girls get on very well. They play, sleep together even wash each other. They have the occasional squabble, but it's more a storm in a teacup then anything else.
