Hi Shelly.
With respect she has survived for 12 months, so she does eat! Some dogs are very picky eaters, but trying all sorts rarely helps, they just expect more and more yummies! Try Naturediet, you can warm this in a microwave, smells great! If she doesn't eat it take it away, dont encourage her, nor fuss over her, try not to draw attention to the problem, cos at present her not eating gets her a LOT of attention! Only offer her a little, dont over face her, don't leave the food down once she has finished if there is food left, she will learn eventually that food is for eating, if you don't it dissappears!
Dawn.

border or rough?
i had this with tara for along time, got over it when she was 4!
have you thought about going natural/barf?

Shelly
What do you feed?
Do you leave her food down?...all day? and for how long at meal times if not
Do you feed between meal snacks(even the odd biscuit)?
Do you chop and change in order to find a food she will eat?
If yuo can give us some more info we can maybe help more although both the other posts are offereing sound advise

My GSD was quite disinterested in food and difficult to tempt to eat. She is fed on complete dried food to which I add a half packet of Nature diet - just to flavour it. Now it's a different story, she can't wait to get started!
thanks for the reply, she does have the odd treat but thats because she seems to eat so little, she prefares our food to dog food, ive tried dried+tinned + i have left it down and given her nothin but even that doesnt tempt her into eating

Most dogs will eat anything if they are hungry enough ;) I would give her the food and then, after 15 minutes, lift it back up again. Don't put it back down until she is due another feed.
It sounds like she is a very smart cookie and has you well trained :D (Dogs are horribly good at doing that :D )

its so hard though, when your dog is looking like a hat rack & still wont eat. tara was really terrible, used to make me cry! she got loads better when i got nell. flynn isnt too bad,but hes a big dog & if he goes a few days without eating much you can really notice it.
i used to try to be so strict, picking the meals up etc but after 3 days you start to get abit worried!!!

I had to take drastic measures with my 2 year old elkie. He would eat approx every 3 days and then would only pick.I had hoped the introduction of a pup might help but it didn't and had tried everything. He started getting boney although he looked ok due to a thick coat and became lethargic.
I spoke to a freind who I respect very much for her 'dog advice' and was advised to not offer him any food at all for 3 days...not even a biscuit.I had to feed the others as normal and allow him to watch and it had to be 3 days....no less(I had already tried 1 DAY)..
Well day one wasn't too bad ,day 2 was awful and day 3 had me in tears! My OH refused to stay at home on the 3rd day while I fed the dogs cos he was so upset....but IT WORKED! He has NEVER refused food since(about 4 months now) devours his food with great enthusiasm. He has put on weight and looks fantastic.
It is not something I would recommend if all other avenues hadn't been explored or for a young dog but it does work! As my freind had said....he often CHOSE to starve himself for 3 days so it wasn't going to harm him.

yes my friends elkie is really really picky too

Never had a problem with the other 2...they'd eat ANYTHING!! But Kas was really hard work and its very worrying.

im talking about Bryony with acer/brodie/questor. i guess you know them all?acer & quest are total pigs but i know she struggles alot trying to maintain Brodies weight.
i think until youve hada dog that wont eat its hard to understand.
my friend clre has two sprollies who eat like their ESS side, but shes recently got a collie who eats like a typical collie & it worries clare alot, although its normal for many BCs/WSs to be like that.....minds on other things i think!

I know of Bryony Brodie but not have not met to speak.I don't think I know the others although since unless I know the owners personally I know most of the show elks by their pedigree name...so may be mistaken
Nikki

wouldnt even try to spell brodies but he is Brainless' breeding.(D litter) , acer is Eskmere<sp?> Gaupa.
quest is also Brainless' breeding! Barbelka Huragan <sp ?> (sorry brainless!!!)

I wouldn't want to spell Brodies name either!! LOL....Yes I do know the other 2....I've seen them occasionally at the shows. I booked my first elkie from Brainless but the bitch missed and she passed me on to the club secretary who in turn put me in touch with my Asa's breeder.I also considered taking one of the pups from her champion bitch since one of the purchasers had had to let her down and she knew I was looking for a pup at that time and the 2 bitches I had booked pups from had both missed. It was very tempting but I decided to stay with the breeder I purchased Asa from since shes been so good to me and I really wanted to stay with her breeding. The fact that the next bitch she bred was a sister of my Asa who has done so well for me in the ring and fulfilled so many of my dreams just confirmed thats what I wanted but if that 1st bitch of Barbaras hadn't missed who knows what I'd have now?

I can reccommend Naturediet too for picky eaters -mine all scoff every mouthfull - adding tuna/sardine oil sometimes helps as do raw eggs but I would'nt pander to him too much - leave the food down for a little while then clear it away and don't give ANY titbits through the day. Good luck - I know how frustrating this can be
thanks for that trevor where is it from?

Yo can get it from larger pet stores or online ...sure someone will give ou the addy.
I would stop giving him ANY treats...nothing at all.Of course he prefers your food...most dogs do :d. Put his food down for 5 mins and then pick up whatever is left(even if he hasn't touched it).Don't offer him anything till his next meal time and then repeat. He needs to understand that he eats what and when YOU choose.I would also decide what your going to feed and stick to it...don't change. It may take a while but you must be strong willed...hes got you very well trained :d
Nikki
Naturediet - it saved me from my picky eater-clean bowls all round now! :)
thanks for that ill give it a go, fingers crossed!
thanks for the advive archer, ill have to stop givin the treats for a while but its so hard when they look at you with those sad eyes.

Believe me I know...
Nikki

I don't bl;ame you for not risking Brodies spelling, lo (Dziarski, pronounsed Jar-Ski, was BOB at Windsor Ch show this year), well done on Quest's! :D

Funny enought Brodie and Archers fussy dogs are related, being sire of one and Grandsire of theother, though I think it is coincidence, as quite a lot of dogs are fussy as young dogs, usually improving with maturity (or mayvbe because we relax and refuse to pander to it :D)

.I think your thinking of the wrong dog Barbara :d. Kas is Kestos Double o seven(K.Raina x Varjdalens Jerry imp).hes the fussy one.Hes the lad who won PG at mid co's and Asa who I think your refering to(grandson of Kapture the moment) is a complete dustbin
Nikki

Yep but he has improved with age. My Kizi was an anorexic, but now at 7 I am finding ehr thieving givben the chance,a dn having to actually cut back on her food. her offspring that I know are all gannets.
try simply not feeding her any human food for a while it may be hard but i know we had this problem wants and we stop feeding him human food for a while and he got over it in a couple of days now he eats both but dont worry like they said he/she has lasted this long she does eat
