Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Coal Tar soap.....
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 05.12.04 18:47 UTC
Don't know whether to panic or not.   Foggy, who was served 2 and a bit weeks ago, has just eaten the best part of a bar of Tesco's Coal Tar Soap. :-o   It says on the label 'not tested on animals'!!!!

I know pregnant woman have cravings, but this is ridiculous.    I thought she was eating some red cheshire cheese, then realised what it was too late.

Vet son says not to worry - she'll probably just have the squits in the morning, but it couldn't be a worse time in her pregancy.   Think I'd better check out the poisons site.

Pups will be clean when they come out Jo :D :D

Seriously though, I am sure Vet son is right and she will just have a queasy tum for a while, let us know if she is okay

I wouldn't panic, Jo! Our old lab regularly used to eat bars of coal tar soap (she must have had 5 over a couple of weeks before we caught her at it - we thought they must have slipped under the bath or something!). She never had the slightest problem from it.
:)

Same here Jo, My labs managed to eat their way through Christmas pressie soaps along with cadboard packaging. No side effects, so you should be ok.
- By John [gb] Date 05.12.04 19:16 UTC
Well, that's Labs for you! I must say though I thought Flatcoats were a bit more discerning!

By the way, I loved that puppy you were holding this morning Jo!

Best wishes, John

If flatcoats were that discerning, John,  they'd probably have eaten Wright's Coal Tar Soap, not good old own-brand Tesco's!! :-)

Nice to know that we're not alone in our idiocyncracies, though - thanks for the feedback, folks!!

Love our new pup - his name's Albert (as in young Albert and the Lion) - he's retrieved his first partridge and woodcock already - can't start them too young!    Think he's scrummy!

<<Think he's scrummy!>>

He is to Jo! I look forward to seeing him in my class! Did I hear you say he's related to Foggy?

Best wishes, John

Foggy's by Little Red Rooster; Albert's by our Gordon, who's also  by Little Red Rooster.    I love the line - very straightforward to train, with no obvious hang-ups.   Just nice people.

Well, Both Foggy and Gordon are smashing so I'm sure Albert will be too. I understand the new Flatcoat in my class today is from your lines too. He's a smart fella too! Wants to please.

Best wishes, John

I shall ask the clinical expert at my office tomorrow if it is toxic but I think not. I'll post tomorrow.

So what swear words does Foggy know, that she needs to wash her mouth out with soap!? :D  Hope she's OK, Jo.

Albert is a great name - would love to meet him some time.  Had to go looking for Albert and the Lion! :D  Don't you let him play with the lions!

Hello Monty's Mum - the only swear words that I've actually heard her utter  were when she's been left behind on supposed potential maternity duty when the others are all enjoying themselves!    She seems fine this morning, but still a bit worried, as some of the ingredients may be carcinogenic according to one  alarmist-don't-eat-anything-because-it's-all-toxic  site.

The ingredients that I don't know are etidronic acid and tetrasodium EDTA, plus three weird numbers, presumably E numbers.

The Lion and Albert has a couple of sequels, that I found on the net - in one, the Ramsbottoms try to claim the insurance for Albert after he's been 'eaten', but just as the Man from the Pru is going to pay up the Lion spits out young Albert because he's inedible.    Ma is disgruntled!    They don't make 'em like that now!!

Albert's Return!  :D :D  Very funny!  Thanks for the laugh, Jo.  I hadn't read any Marriott Edgar poems before.

I imagine the air's quite blue when Foggy gets left behind!  Keeping my fingers crossed that she stays well after her recent snack.  I'm sure she'll be fine.

Hi Jo

I consulted with some of the pharmacologist I work with and to their knowledge there is no Tar is coal Tar soap!!!!! and your bitch should be okay.

How is she now?
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 09.12.04 21:48 UTC
Thank you, ManxPat - she seems to be OK - had the squits two days after - I half expected bubbles to come out!    Taking her for a scan tomorrow, so will see what's what then.

I remember my mother saying that she had a craving for smelling tar when they were re-surfacing roads when she was pregnant with me, and I'm alright - well, most of the time:-)

HI Jo
According to the clinical experts I work with, the tar was taken out of coal tar soap a few years ago. They also suggested that cravings of coal, roapa and tar (like you lay on roads) are highly documeted in human pregancies.

I have to say my question did raise a few smiles and raised eyebrows but 4 of them felt your bitch would be okay.

Let me know how the scan goes - you must be excited, is this going to be a xmas litter?????

Jo,

Hope she'll be ok and pups too.

My old Boxer (now departed) also used to pinch bars of soap to eat, she quite liked
the johnsons baby soap and the ornamental soaps shaped like shells etc.
She also liked drinking bubble bath water. My current Boxers like licking bars of soap and
the drinking of bubble bath water.........
One even likes drinking from the taps!

No accounting for taste is there :D

Isn't soap made out of fat with caustic soda or some such?    I suppose  it's the fat content that they go for ????

Washing your mouth out with soapy water is a figurative term of speech Jo. Not something which is supposed to be taken literally!! ;)

Best wishes, John

You should have told my mum that when I was young - heard my older brothers swearing - went home and said ******beep beep - I was marched up stairs and had to hold the cake of soap in mouth, and then wash out/gurgle.

Never ever swore in front of my mum again!!! ;)  (well maybe in my teens under my breath!!! :-)

Arr, the joys of youth Mel, pushing the boundries! A distant memory now, in my advancing years. ;)
