Help

Before I take a trip to the vet I thought I'd just see if anyone had any good advice. Ive had and have dogs and never any probs like this. My 15week old Doby pup seems very skinny. He has 4 good meals a day on large breed puppy food, that my Dalmatian also had and thrived on. BUT he looks so skinny. At 8 weeks old the vet said he was overwieght and would end up with limb problems but when we went home and checked and weighed out his food etc we were giving him the right amount, and we have increased this accordingly to how big he his growing. He's about 7/8kg now. I know a dogs ribs should be able to be felt but not like this!!??? His worning is totally up to date, and otherwise his coat eyes etc etc are in perfect condition, and he seems vey happy and content

Any ideas?

Thanks
P

Are you feeding to appetite or according to the guide on the bag.  I assume he is on 3 meals a day.  What are his stools like (consistency and frequency.  I would say he sounds a bit light for 15 weeks as a pup of my own medium breed would be 8kg by their second jabs, and they are only 20kg as adults.

If he is eating as much as he wants at each siting, maybe he needs to go back to four meals a day for a while to increase intake, or this particular food doesn't suit him.  Is it the food he was reared on by the breeder.  If so I would ask them how much they would be feeding at this age.

Well he has four meals weighed out as per the guide on the bag but we are giving him more at the mo. His stools seem fine and he goes after every meal. Sometimes a bit loose. Like our Dalmatian he wolfs his food down and would probably eat more and more but all pups (and dogs) are like that. Aren't they??!

Well every dog is an individual and if he is thin then I would feed more.  the reason I ask abou the stools is that somwtimes if the food isn't being absorbed or pup overfed it goes in and out too fast, without being digested.  If poup wants more then give it to him, but just enough to kep him well covedred.  If vet thought him too fat at 8 weeks and he seems much too thin now then try to aim for something in between.
