Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Persistantly Piddling Pug..... HELP!!
- By BrightBlue [gb] Date 06.12.04 22:14 UTC
I have an 8 month old female, I take her out when she wakes up, after eating,   and regularly in between but she persists in soiling in the house.  I used puppy training pads for the first few months but she ignored them, I've now bought a crate and now she has started to soil in it as well.

She does not 'ask' to go out at all, she thinks nothing of peeing right in front of me (I tell her firmly no and take her outside).  I've tried everything I can think of, rewarding her and making a huge fuss of her when she goes outside still does not seem to instill the rule in her.  I am now worried she has been 'trained' to soil the house and this behaviour will never end, it's taken all the joy away from having her, in every other way she is a fab pet but this is ruining it for us.  Please can anyone suggest anything at all?

Thank you in advance
BB

Hi BB,

It must be frustrating and you are not alone - quite often people have this problem so don't despair ;)  When you take her out when she wakes, after food, playing etc., do you physically stand with her until she has done her toilet?  Do you have a command / word for her to go such as "busy", "be quick", "hurry up" that she actually recognises the meaning of yet?

It could be she is still genuinely confused because of something very simple.

HTH, no doubt someone else will be along soon with detailed info.

Kind regards, Teri :)

Thanks for your response, I forgot to add that I do stand with her and wait until she performs, and she has a command too, she seems to recognise that word as when I mention it indoors she knows we are on our way outside.

Hi again BB,

Sorry that bit of info wasn't useful :(  Just another thought - is it only piddles she does in the house, particularly in front of you?  She may have a bladder infection, cystitis, urinary tract problem ..... Might be worth taking her along to your vet and get any potential medical problem ruled out.

That aside, apart from endless patience, even more regular outside visists, reinforcing training habits and keeping the mop bucket fresh filled and to hand I'm not sure where to go on this.  She may just grow out of it.  Hopefully someone else will join in and advise better.

Keep in touch anyway, and I'll get my thinking cap dusted down ;)

Regards,  Teri

ps. but just a thought - it might NOT be a good idea to mention your "toilet" word indoors :D

I had the same problem with my male pup and we was about 8/9 months before it finally clicked with him to go outside and this seemed to happen overnight.  However even now at 13 months, he will still go indoors and won't ask to go outside and hates going out in the cold.  Just keep up the training constantly and she will eventually learn.
