Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Why has my dogs nose changed colour?
- By Guest [gb] Date 03.12.04 21:25 UTC
Hello

This is just something I have been wondering about....my Westie's nose has changed colour recently from jet black to a greyish colour, I am not worried but am wondering why this has happened and if in fact it indicates a deficiency or illness? (he seems as healthy as ever!) If anyone can shed any light on this I would be pleased!

Thanks

Hi, I have heard of a condition called 'snow nose' (I think).  Maybe it is that, but I don't know what causes it - maybe you could do a search on it as it has been discussed on here before.  Someone who knows more will hopefully be along soon.  Have you consulted your vet?

My eldest GSDs nose has started to 'fade'. It could be an age related thing.

Maybe someone else might be able to help you better :)

It is more than likely snow nose, It often happens during the winter although my Lab's nose turned in the summer  :)

It is nothing to worry about as it is not harming them, just a pigment problem.

I gave some pigment plus for a couple of months. This worked and her nose is back to it's normal brown self :)

I am doing research on this in my own breed and I have come to the conclusion that 'winter nose' is genetic and the dog/bitch must both carry the brown nose gene to make the dogs nose brown but only one must carry the gene to pass on the 'winter nose' which usually comes about after lack of ultra violet rays.

Can anyone else give me  another opnion?

My Lab crosses nose changed colour after his castration.  He did worry while in the vets, and rubbed the bit of skin just above the nose raw, and as it healed, his nose changed from black to brown - now this all happened in November, so who 'nose' what the influencing factors were - the castration, the injury to his nose, or the time of year..........

Maya,

I had a little bitch that also lost the colour in her nose it did worry me as  I had intended breeding her as I had been showing her for a while.

I was at a breed seminar and brought up  ( approx 30-40 people there)  Everyone was in 100% agreement that it was in particular lines and most knew which lines but in our breed it was felt relatively easy to breed out and that some of these lines other qualities were such that you would not rule them out of your breeding program but carefully plan them.

Blue,  thank you for that its very interesting as I am trying to compile data of the same for our breed what breed are you in?  I am in SCWT's and the standard 'dictates Big Black Noses' I would like to corrulate all data on Brown noses or winter noses or snow noses what ever people call them.  Any information would be appreciated

WHWT.

I think a lot of the older long serving members and breeders may give you info.
