- By weims [gb] Date 16.03.02 21:15 UTC
Has anyone got, or knows someone who has got one of the Hamster Baskets dog cages? I am thinking of getting one for our car and any experience would be gratefully accepted.

Thanks
Lynn

never heard of them, where did you find out about them -what are they like-ive bought a silent traveller dog cage, and it is very quiet, covered in A plastic finish . so im not creaking and rattling around corners now,

I had an e mail from them, so I visited their site. It looks good and it 2" welded mesh, covered in plastic, supposedly rattle free, made to measure for £150........ plus £20 extra if you want a divider and £20 extra if you want double doors. They has escape hatch, and a hand hold in the front so you can put a lead on the dog before opening the door. They sound very good, but I have not heard of them before.... they also make baskets for freezers....

They can be used in the car and indoors too. They are fully removable and weigh around 28 kgs.

Just wondered if anyone else had heard of them?

Weims, did you get a Hamster Basket Cage and if so are you pleased with it? I bought some freezer baskets from them about 25 years ago and they are still going strong, and now need to buy a new cage for my new to me car. Jackie H

Weims, tell us if you're pleased - husband was looking at them on their web site yesterday. He was particularly attracted to the idea that they do an expanding one that you can use with the back seats down if you want to, but wonder about the strength of it?

Yes Jo thats what attracted me I usualy only take two dogs at a time but some time I need room for 4 so an expanding cage would be wonderfull. JH

Well I;'ve unpacked it, its 2" welded mesh coated in black plastic. Seems very strong, but I have yet to put the dogs into it.... Its held together with metal springs and there is some assembly required. It comes with instructions which look easy to follow. I have ordered the double door with divider. WIll put it in the car this afternoon and put the dogs into it.... will let you know...

So far its looking good!

Weims, do let us know how you get on, I've measured my car up (and thats a job and a half) and have pen poised to order but awating your consumer report. Jackie H

Consumer report coming up....

It was easy to assemble its held together with metal coils, it seems sturdy enough for my weims, the only thing I would say is make sure the measurements are accurate and double check them. We asked for a cage 36" high, as the doorway into the car was 36 and 1/2" so we had half inch to spare......... it actually measures 36 1/2" and we couldnt get it in the car, but when I rang the man and told him he said to bend in the sides to bring the top down and we have managed to get it in.... but its a tight fit. When measuring make sure you allow for any trim, by that I mean our car has an interior light on a panel behind the door on the roof and we didnt allow for this and as I said its a tight fit. The doors are held shut by a hook type of thingy and its easy to open but the dogs wouldnt be able to open it. Only way of actually locking them would be to buy a padlock.

I am pleased with it and the dogs like it, only thing I dont like is the 2" gap under the door, but the man said that is there to enable you to put the lead on the dog thru the handhole half way up the door and then pass the lead under the door so you have hold of the dog before you open the door, a good idea I suppose!

It cost me just under £200 which I dont think is a bad price. If you decide to go for it, make your measurements a bit smaller rather than just to fit.... and its taken a month to come....

Weims - I'm a bit stupid. How are you supposed to get your hand through a 2" gap to put on, say , a slip lead? Would it work? Would the dogs get their legs caught in the gap? (I'm a bit paranoid about getting legs trapped, cruciate injury, hip dislocation, etc etc.

Feedback appreciated again......

Hi Jo, The hand hole is 4" square and half way up the door, the gap at the bottom of the cage is about 2" for you to pass the lead under before opening the door, so you have the dog already safely clipped onto a lead before opening the door. I have put vet bedding (double thickness so they dont feel the wire) on the bottom and obviously the gap is less. I have let the dogs go in and have a look and shut the doors on them, they seemed ok! But in all honesty I am concerned that the puppy could get her leg thru the gap, although it wouldnt go far under because of the back door of the car, I dont think she would get stuck, if you see what I mean. Its difficult trying to describe......... maybe I should take a pic and let people who are interested have a copy and then you would be able to see what I mean.??? Anyone want a pic e mail me at kidmal.weimaraners@ntlworld.com.

As we ordered the cage with double doors, if we remove the divider then another piece has been supplied that makes the double door into one, sooo if push came to shove it would be possible to fit onto the bottom of the cage to remove most of the gap.

sorry, the more I try to explain the more complicated I make it sound... I will take pics...!

ive got new cages called silent travellers. theyre very good, but without the gaps and holes lynn has in hers, its plastic coated so no noise at all, fairly light with safety doors added too, also a fold down divider, i didnt think it was expensive-but cant remember how much it was.
