Am I correct in my understanding that the laws of libel/slander also apply to the internet?

Yes very much so as long as you have all the relevant information and you can back up your claim against something or someone.

Hi Liberty,

Slander has to be spoken, libel written (think that's the right way around) so, I guess that could mean that libel could apply but just how easily traced something could be to a specific individual is a different story.  I think because it is so easy to "assume" identities on the www it would be difficult to prove the source - but then if it was a serious enough case MI5 or Interpol or somebody such as that could probably nail you <LOL> - perhaps best we all just watch what we say/write :D :D :D

Then again I'm no legal eagle - in case you haven't worked that out - so this might be absolute drivel ..........

Gotta get to bed, Teri ;)

scary isnt it!!!!

Oh yes it certainly does!  People should KNOW what they write is true BEFORE they accuse, it will only end up in trouble for them otherwise.  The laws apply as strongly to the internet as anywhere else, and they can't hide behind false email addressess and pseudonyms either!

Libel refers to the written word and the laws absolutely 100% apply!  Have read an interesting case on this topic recently-everyone should be aware of this, and it is far more easy to trace things than you would think!

I considered taking some action a while ago after someone deliberately spread lies about me :(  but decided not to take it any further after some thought.

Spaniel-lover, do you have a reference to the interesting case? as i would like to read it :)

Will have a look to see if there is something I can point you in the direction of as this was in one of my legal journals, but will get back to you! :)
