Topic Dog Boards / Health / My Kieron sure stinks... Any advice?

Well, as some of you may still remember, I have two Siberian huskies. One of them, a 2.5 year old spayed bitch, Kieron, has really started to stink in the last two or three weeks. Siberian huskies are generally an odor-free breed, meaning they don't usually have the classic doggy smell. But Kieron does, but Houdini doesn't.

Kieron has never ever smelt like this before, she has always been a fair smelling girl. Like I said, Houdini doesn't stink at all. The smell smells like mud, in a way. My first concern was her anal glands, but she doesn't smell fishy or pooey. She just smells like dirt and mud. So I gave her a bath. She really stunk up the bathroom, which is normal, but she didn't smell any better after the bath. In fact, I think she smelled even worse.

So I thought a bit and wonder if maybe her stink is related to her blowing her coat? Currently she is heavily blowing and shedding her coat. A husky will blow its coat twice a year, so this is Kieron's fifth shed. She has never stunk like this before.

I just don't know what to do about the smell. She has been bathed, brushed, and her anal glands have been checked.

So what do you all think? Do you think it could just be her shedding coat retaining odors and I should just keep on trugging and brushing her every day and just hope that the smell goes away once she finished blowing her coat?

Thanks for any help you might be able to offer! I appreciate it!

Are Sibes liable to coat funk? Just a thought....

I've never heard of such a thing, do you a link with any info? I'm all for anything!

Just search on Google, some sites mention a smell and some don't but it seems to be Mals and not Sibes. Delta usually stinks, but thats because she LOVES getting wet .....but a bath usually makes her okay (for a day or two until she gets wet again :D :D)

Maybe you could contact the Sibe club and ask them if they have any ideas?

If bathing isn't having any effect, then I'd seek advice from your vet. It may be worth getting her thyroid function checked out if there is no apparent reason for the smell.

Does she have any other symptoms?

Our Akita has just finished a really heavy moult. Until we bathed him on Saturday, he really stank , so much so we couldn't have him in the house. I'm glad to say, he's now back to his nice-to-be-near self. Do your dogs live outside? I think, no matter how clean their quarters, dogs which live outside & then come indoors always smell more than the soft-living indoor dogs. I've found that with Spitz breeds anyway.

No, she doesn't have any other symptoms other than her odor. If, that is, you want to count her talking about at me when I tell her she stinks! :)

Yeah, they both spend most of their days outside. They can't stand the warmer temperature in the house, seeing as it's winter. I think I will just keep a good eye on her and wait for her to stop shedding and see if the smell stops. Thanks for your advice!
