I have been the very proud owner of a GSD for 5 weeks now. She is adorable, but in the last two weeks she has begun eating her own poop. She will leave it when I say "leave", but if I am not around she eats it. Is this something she will grow out of, if not how can I discourage this unpleasant behaviour? Mostly this happens during the night so its pointless me telling her off hours after its happened as she wont know what she's being told off for.
Hi Guest, I have been told that if you add courgette or pineapple to your girls meal(s) then they shoudl amke her poop very unappetising and therefore make her not want to eat it. There is something else too but can't think of it at the mo, maybe someone alse can help :)

Hi guest :)
I have 2 GSDs that do exactly the same, my bitch being the worst one :(
I've tried everything from pineapple to Marmite, and none of it works. I even rang my vet for advice. He told me that there wasn't really anything that you can give them to stop this, but to make sure that all poops are cleaned up straight away, and to be extra vigilant when I'm out with them.
Sorry I can't help more :(

Ditto Wolfie :D
My GSD bitch has
always done it from the day that I got her (10 monthsish) and the only way that I can control it is by being very "poo proud" ie, almost standing waiting for it to drop so that I can dispose of it, sorry to be so graphic :D I have tried everything that has been recommended and it just doesn't work. Unfortunately some dogs are like this for life and all you can do is be very vigilant. ;)
Hi Guest,
i too have a gsd who does this. She has done this since i got her at 8 weeks old! She is now 13 years old. Whats worse, given the chance she'd eat the poo from my other dogs. Unfortunately its something you may have to accept as a unpleasant trait in your dog.
Try and make sure you get to it before she does! If you dont, be careful she doesnt try licking you on the lips afterwards. That's my dogs favourite thing to do after her 'meal'. I think she finds it funny as we all run a mile when she comes bounding up for a kiss and cuddle! :) All the best with her, im sure she's a lovely dog and will bring you much happiness and fun.
