Is there anything currently on the market for the smell of my bitch who is in season, she is really stinky bless her, it didn't make me feel any better when my mother came in my house tonight and said GOD IT STINKS IN HERE. Also her vulva has not swollen up this time is this normal or does she need to see vet.

I would take her to the vet. None of my bitches have ever smelld when in season
KAREN

I've never noticed any unusual smell whenever any of my bitches have been in season. I would contact the vet because this sounds very strange.
I can't understand this because they even sell some form of tablet in pets at home to stop the smell of the season, but the person who worked there told me not to bother as it doesn't work, so it must happen if they are even selling things for it.
Hi Claudia
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the tablets and sprays that you can get to stop a bitch in season from smelling were to stop it smelling to other dogs not people. My bitch has just come out of a season and she didn't smell any differant to me.

oh i don't know, i am in a tizz woz panick now, what could be wrong with her. WHERE IS ARCHER AND JOHN IN TIMES OF NEED LIKE THIS.

A smell could mean an infection, I suggest an apointment at the vet tomorrow is a good idea, even if its just to tell you "nothing wrong" it will settle your mind.
Has your bitch gone off her food, drinking more water/weeing more, acting "differently" to her norm? If so DEFENTLY vets...but just for peice of mind surely it is worth it?

The tablets and sprays are to stop the pheromone smell affecting and enticing other dogs, and if they are started as soon as the season starts they can be very helpful (though not if you have an entire dog in the house as well!). To a human, even one with an acute sense of smell, any change in odour shouldn't be noticeable.

I often notice a slightly sweet smell when my girls came into season, but I'd be concerned that there is no swelling of the vulva, and think this should be checked without delay by the vet.
She has been eating normal until today, she is weeing as normal, and she is still very happy and playfull. As for no swelling when i say this i meen that(sorry to put it like this don'y know how else to explain it) the top bit is swollen but where it goes into a v shape that is still normal.
oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, ice queen you don't think it is a pyo do you.

I think its too early for pyo to appear, pyo is normaly (as far as I know) after a season. Now don't start getting to worried because only afew weeks ago we had a bitch speyed due to pyo so still at the moment I am kind of paranoid by it, but I still think during a season it is not pyo, but please don't take what I say, I am no expert at all, I am no-where near a qulifed vet but I do think an infection of some kind is possible I don't want to say anything, I just really do think anything abnormal like this and you are obviously worried (mothers instinct) then a trip to the vets are needed.
Like I said before, even if just for the vet to say "nothings wrong" its worth it to put your mind at rest. When it comes to your babies (fore legged or two legged) the last thing you would want to do is put them at any risk by ignoring anything that is abnormal for them. The smell is obviously strong if you can smell it and your mum smelt it (not a nice smell to have round the house!)

My bitch never smelled when she was in season.
Pop her along to your vet, even if it's just for peace of mind :)

I think my Anna is the only dog who I have noticed with a slight smell! None of my others ever have. As to the swelling of the vulva, this is usually slightly swollen at the start of the season but gets more pronounced by the end of the first week or so and tends to remain that way for a week or so after the season has finished.
It is so difficult on a board where you cannot see the dog to categorically say, "You have no problem" or "Get to the vet straight away" because some people's sense of smell (And for that matter whether it is a nasty smell or not) is quite different. As with everything, if you are at all worried then your vet is the person to talk to.
Regards, John
One of my bitches had a 'strange smell' when inseason, I took her to the vet
and she did have an infection which cleared up with antibiotics.
I have also known a friends Boxer bitch have a pyometra after her first season :(
Every bitch is different but if you think there's anything unusual I'd advise taking
her to your vet for peace of mind.
I'd much rather be told nothing to worry about and have the vet check her over.
Hi
I took my girl to the vets this afternoon and he does not think there is anything unusual about the smell that is coming from her. He said he has seen it plenty of times and that dogs are all different just like people are. I think i really insulted him when i kept saying, now are you sure, in the end he said i have been a vet for 25 years i di know what i am talking about, so i do feel a bit better now. Call me paranoid but i will still be keeping my eye on her. She has not eaten her food again today but i am not sure if she is being fussy because i tried her with a tit bit to test her and she ate it and i understand that bitches can be very funny with food when in season.
