On a number of trips to France, I've spotted a spaniel that resembles a large English Cocker, almost always with a dark gold coat.  A main characteristic is a somewhat large, very noble head.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be a field spaniel?

Like Archer says, it could have been a Field Spaniel (colouring would be liver or dark brown rather than gold) but it could also have been a Cocker - I've seen quite a few very big red/gold Cockers when travelling in France & Italy.
