Topic Dog Boards / Health / Shake and Vac Allergy
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 01.12.04 22:35 UTC
My OH unfortunately used the shake and vac in our bedroom without me knowing.  We use it in other areas of the house that the dogs dont go into. Our older BC sleeps in the bedroom and has now been waking up itching like nobody's business, so I am assuming is allergic to it.  Any ideas how I can get rid of it or neutralise it?

Lots of vacuuming and shampooing might help. I've even heard of people who have had to fit a new carpet to get rid of the stuff! It's as bad as that!

IMHO I think it is vile stuff - all the animals and all the humans do a good impression of the monkey dance when it was used in my house by accident. Our older lab hand another attack of Canine Acne (had it when he was about 12 months old). Lots of vacuuming - and if that does not work I think like John said you might need to look at replacing the carpeting.

sorry to be the bearer of such gloom.

Thanks
Patricia

A pup I bred had such a bad reaction to it that shee needed to be treated at the Vets.  Febreeze can badly afect some dogs too.

I would say don't use anything unless it is absolutely noted as safe around animals.

My youngest cannot come in the front door if it has been used, she sneezes so violently. It irritates my OH's skin condition, and the rest of us scratch like fury. You really need to be careful about what you use. My best remedy for dog odour is a vanilla scented candle.

The only way I found getting rid of this stuff, is hire out a carpet cleaner. You might have to go over your carpet a few times, but it should get 99% of it out.

As manxpat has said, scented candles, or oil burners, get rid of dog odour a lot better than shake and vac :)

I have an old carpet and when we last cleaned it we used BIOLOGICAL WASHING POWDER diluted in a Vax machine, not only did it remove sticky residues from squash/milkshake (damn kids :D ) but it also left the carpet cleaner and fresher than the usual Vax liquid.  The carpet has stayed cleaner for longer too :D :D :D

carpet cleaner it is going to have to be as it is only a 3 month old carpet.  It was pure mistake on his part and trying to be helpful.  I usually do the vacuuming but he did whilst I was doing some overtime at work.  I guess I never thought about warning him not to use it where the animals go.  I too use scented candles etc if necessary.

My EBT had a very bad allergic reaction to shake and vac. she had a very itchy red rash from head to toe, when i took her to the vet he identified it immediatley and gave her some tablets which sorted her out. I took his advice hoovered the carpet a couple of times and no more probs on that score kersten

Recently my sister had to clean a really grubby carpet (Walkway part) and the biological washing powder, although pretty good wasn't shifting all of the dirt so she added some soda crystals to the mix and hey presto!!!!!  perfectly clean carpet - it really is like new :D :D

Wish I'd thought of adding soda crystals to the bio mix

My oldest girl is allergic to anything and everything.
On visiting a friends house who used shake n vac she came out in a bright red rash all over the underside. I fund that a nice salt bath, some sudocrem and never visiting again resolved it.
