Topic Dog Boards / General / Reconsidering leaving ID tags on collar

I have ID tags for my two but don't leave them on their everyday collars - though after today I may reconsider :( I was driving down the A3 when suddenly the person in front broke sharply and put their hazards on - a dobe bitch was loose a running down the A3. A few of us managed to follow her closely and I was luckily able to head her off from going down the slip road onto the M25. The dog was absolutely shattered by this point but still running at full pelt down the A3, the poor thing was absolutely terrified! When she slowed down I jumped out of the car but she evaded me, though the second time I jumped out I went down to my knees and managed to coax her into coming to me - luckily the people behind me had stopped completely (this is a 70mph road :( ) I put her in my  car (I didn't have my two with me at the time) and a couple of other drivers came up to see if she was okay. The police arrived shortly after and phoned the dog warden who wouldn't come out as the dog had been caught! The police couldn't take her in their car and had no vehicles available to take her back to their HQ in, so I agreed to drive her there myself - she had no ID tag on so they had no way of contacting her owner - I just hope she was microchipped! She was a lovely sweet natured girl. I'm just so glad it didn't end differently - she was a very lucky girl! Not many dogs would survive being loose on the A3 :(

I just wondered why you left the taga off originally?  It is a leagal requirement for dogs to wear them.  I know many people don't have collars and tags on their dogs when at home, but you never know if a dog shouold escape abd get into danger as in theis case.

I live on a busy road and feel the risk of wearing the collars when I awm not around is less than the chance of them getting out the front door when the kids are in and out for I have careless visitors, though I have it pretty well ingrained in the dogs that they must wait at the sooor, you never know.

Ah, I have tags on the collars I walk them in - just not on the ones they wear at home. If I take them off the property then they do wear tags (unless i'm going to ringcraft where I use a slip lead or similar) - I was just thinking that I should leave them on at all times now. Luckily we live on a farm and the road off the property has a cattle grid on it so there's little chance of them being able to get to the main road though we take no chances - we have a dog guard up behind the door as an added precaution to stop them running out of the house :)

When I go to one sheepdog trial the entrance  & exit are over cattle grids for obvious reasons My collies simply long jumped over the cattle grids as did many others
