If you breed in the UK do you have to declare puppy sales to the taxman?

Yes, because it's income.

Do you keep receipts proving costs deductable from profit/income?  Is there an online guide that anyone knows of?  Is it different to selling livestock?  I'd appreciate some figures if possible. :)

Customs & Excise will only get invloved if the turnover of a business is over their exemption limit which is currently £58,000 per annum & Inland Revenue deal with income tax

I just posted this before but my post disappeared for some reason

Well I keep a list of expenditure and incomeings from my dog showing/breeding hobby, and am about £4200 in the red since I startyed keeping track about 5 or 6 years ago.  Up until then I just kept track of the costs of the actual litter, and still found there wasn't a taxable amount.

If you have ANY untaxed income, you are legally bound to inform the Inland Revenue - usually by completing a Tax Return. You should keep all receipts, bill etc relating to this. Some costs will be allowed to be deducted from the income - but any profit will be subject to tax, unless your total income is so low that you come under the threshold for tax. From what I have heard on here, it is difficult to make much of a profit on a litter (particularly a first litter where you have a lot of one off costs - whelping box etc) - but it should still be declared, even if you make a loss.

Remember that income Tax and VAT are completley seperate things.  Your liability for income tax is much lower than the threshold for VAT registration.
