Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / I am looking for a chihuahua

Hello

I am looking for a chihuahua pup or young adult can you guys on here point me in the right direction.  I have contacted a couple of people from this site and I have yet to have a reply, I do not want to keep emailing as it is a waste of my time and theres if they do not intend to reply.

I have been to a couple of licensed breeders and was shocked to see the sorts of prices they want.  Apparently they have weekly RSPCA checks and do the best for the dogs, they buy in whole or part litters then sell them on.  They are asking between £400 and £1300 depending on whether or not you want just for pet, want a male or female, or the show, long or short hair.

The couple who own one of the licesed kennels bred one of there litter earlier this year and now they are breeding the same girl only this kc registering the pups and selling for double the amount.

I am confused as to where to go to get a dog as everyone seems so nice up front and get you interested then hit you with the price.  I thought about £500 for one as lets face it any more than that and they are only breeding for money those poor animals.

I have read another text similar to this about Kc regs but what can they do as there are no laws to stop you breeding twice yearly or every season apart from animal cruelty complaints.

So please what is a good price, what health tests etc I would be ever so grateful and I apologise for sounding off it just annoys me how people want to make so much money out of such a little dog.

Thanks

Chihuahuas can have all sorts of problems & have small litters. If the buyer wants a show dog this entails running the puppy on until teeth etc are come through so hence the higher cost. Breeders can charge what they like & more is not necessarily better

Why E mail breeders when you can call them & speak to them first hand. E mails are ok if you have already contacted the breeder & are seeking an update. or you already know the breeder.

Chihuahuas are rather flavour of the moment with buyers so some breeders take advantage of this

I know a Chihuahua breeder & Champ show who has has one litter in two years & kept the puppies(all two of them)to show & she alway has a waiting list., she used an outside stud & the bitch had to have a C section due to inertia & she was spayed at the same time. If she had decided to sell a puppy she would have had to charge in excess of £500 just to cover the stud fee & C section costs. She had to hand rear the pupiies too

licensed breeders are in business.........and that business is to profit from their dogs, so you would do best to steer clear.

Find yourself a good reputable breeder who does health tests prior to mating and who breeds to improve the breed, not for money.

Im sure that there will be someone on here who can point you in the right direction :-)

"they buy in whole or part litters then sell them on.  They are asking between £400 and £1300"

ask yourself how much they are buying the puppies for,..........and then how much profit they are making..............I think you will find they are laughing all the way to the bank, and places like this often sell sickly and poor quality puppies as they can buy them cheaply and sell them on.

You have everything to lose and nothing to gain from buying from a place such as this.

Only consider buying a pupppy direct from a breeder, never a dog dealer!  Weekly RSPCA visits would suggest a cause from worry on behalf of the welfare organisation with the place anyway.  If you find a caring reputable breeder (probably a show breeder) you will find that it is easier to get on a waiting list for a dog pup than a bitch pup, although you may eventually get a slightly older bitch pup who will not be suitable for the show ring or  as a potential brood bitch.

bye
Gwen
