One of my 6 day old pups has got pneumonia :( She was crying a lot and not feeding, tried to help her on a nipple and noticed she sounded like she had a lot of fluid, snuffling and snorting. Took her straight to the vets and he said she has pneumonia probably caused through milk getting to her lungs, she had some milk through a tube, antibiotics and some fluid - glucose? Also I have glucose to give her orally every 3 hours
Is there anything else I can do ???? Anyone have any experience of this ????
A very worried mummy :(

Just keep fingers crossed she either will or won't make it, but you will have treid your best. Hope she pulls though but don't beat yourself up about it if she doesn't as it will spoil your enjoyment of the rest of the liter.

She is still with us ! Is feeding from mum and seems a lot more settled this morning, she has to go back to vets this morning for more antibiotics, does anyone know how long this will take to clear up ??
Also another question (sorry) mum was showing signs of a calcium defficiency, panting and digging and basically being a bit unsettled, the vet gave her a shot of calcuim and told me to up her does of tablets, she is on Canovel and is having half a tablet per day as she is under 9kg, he told us to put her on one and a half tablets twice a day as any calcium she doesnt need she will pee away - Is this right?? I have 110% faith in my vet but unfortunaelty she went on holiday yesterday and isn't back until monday :(
Thanks for your help

Hi Lydia, One of my pups was born without a heartbeat and I had to wave him through the air and really rub hard with a towel to get it going. The lungs are filled with a fluid, cant remember what it is called but they need a certain amount and when I waved pup through air, too much came out, by day 4 he had contracted pneumonia. My vet did exactly the same with ABs but I fed pup by bottle small amounts every hour, just enough for him to fill but not come down nose and not go into lungs, dont let him suck too hard as he will take in more air than food. I had to inject him every day with ABsfor 5 days. His lungs were still a bit raspy, a week later so vet gave another course of liquid drops ABs. He is now nearly 12 weeks and is completely clear and catching up rapidly in size and weight.
Sorry have just read you post properly and pup is not feeding, If your pups is too weak to suck, try a little 5ml dropper with some carnation milk and water.
Hope all turns out well
Good luck
Kay
